'Gender Neutral' usernames

Why do people create a username that gives no indication if they are male or female?
Even in their profile and avatar, some give no hint if they are male or female.

Is that intentional?

If so, why?

It didn't even occur to me to make a gender-specific username. As for the image, I just try to find something that sort of matches the username. The gender-neutrality is completely a coincidence.

I agree.... mine of course is descriptive in one sense but not another.... but if you look at my profile pic and the words I use it is obvious.

When I wade into some thread, I'd almost prefer that people read my (hopefully) thoughtful comments from the point of view that I'm a human first....

But I agree that folks who have no real profile pic or gender designation listed there diminish their own participation in this site.

I mean, I don't think most people think to bother with a username that is gender-specific when they first sign up for the forum. HOWEVER, I think it's ridiculous if they don't have male/female listed in their profile. If they don't have that, I usually won't respond to them.

Agreed. Mine just happens to be gender neutral. If someone wants to know my gender, it's been clearly posted in my biography since I had my account. They can look there.

I also agree that people who give no indication at all are typically up to no good, and avoid them. Posting no gender anywhere is an easy way for me to realize someone has 0 credibility.

No, your not too cynical. I think that's the most common reason people don't include it in their profile. If you're going to do that though, then your yahoo messenger name probably shouldn't be your easily google-able real name (yep, I've seen that recently).

Perfect example- no sign whatsoever of determining male or female, without going to your posts and going through them until you find an indication.

I got two PM's asking "Why is that important?"

I guess if this was a 'World News' forum, it wouldn't matter at all.

But here on Lit, there are many gender-specific topics and forums, and it would help to know that when responding- some guys may not want to 'fuck the person above you' if it's a dude, for example.

And (like me) a girl may not want to respond to a provocative PM from a guy, but might if it was a girl. That one may be hard for a guy to understand...

Anyway, I was just wondering the thought process here.

No. In a perfect world, where time is no limit, that would be exactly correct.

You have 9 PM's, and they are of a sexual nature.

You are on your second glass of Pinot Grigio, and feeling really good, and would like to chat to a female.

You go through the PM's, and the two best, most clever ones, that actually relate to something you've posted on a forum give you no indication of male or female.

So you have to toss them aside, and go to the others. <Yes, you could chat with them, which creates a need to gently reject them- who wants to go through that?>

Why not, in the "A few details about yourself" in profile, give that info?
