Yes, in unexpected sudden death, most people die alone, or at least not with someone knowing they are dying. As far as Byron being alone in general, he wasn't. He had me, his long time friends and his family. As it turned out, he and I were talking on Skype very shortly before he died and since he didn't know what happened, he had no idea he was dying, alone or otherwise.

Geeze what a horrifically insensitive thing for him to have said. I gather that you understood he hadn't likely meant to offend, but that still had to sting. Your response was handled with grace.
In this case, I assume it is just social ineptitude.
