A gay married couple said they were refused entry into the United States after a U.S. customs official at the Toronto airport wouldn't accept their customs clearance form as a family.

Toronto Star

Is this just the beginning? Do other countries laws become null and void at U.S. borders?

Only when the powers that be don't like them

It's rediculous that the US government can't get its head out of its ass long enough to realize they're just delaying the inevitable? It's GOING to happen.

:(

What is America coming to. Refusing entry to the US because of sexual preferences. What a sad country we have become. THE SHAME

Well, actually, yes they do. Just like you are no longer protected by the U.S. constitution when you go to other countries. That's the way the world works.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for gay marriage myself, and I think we should change our law so that they're legal. Unfortunately, until that day comes, we must live with injustices such as these and in the meantime fight the good fight.

I don't think that's quite fair. It's not as if the government is intentionally letting terrorists pass while denying gays entry. We don't let in known terrorists, we arrest them. It's just that we don't know who is and who isn't very well yet.

I first heard of this story through a good article in the Gay City News (a free gay paper in NYC).

What happened is that they passed successfully through U.S. immigration. When they reached customs, they presented a form that was labeled as being "one per family." When they were told the U.S. did not recognize their same-sex marriage and that they would have to fill out individual forms, they appealed to a supervisor who reinforced the subordinate's decision. They felt it was an affront to their dignity, so they went back home.

Is this right? No. But is it the decision of the United States who it wants to admit? Yes. Could the couple have entered the United States? Yes. They only had to fill out two separate forms. They are the ones who made the decision to go home. They were not denied entry because they were gay, they were denied because they refused to fill out the separate forms.
