Gay marriage is "eclipse of God": Vatican

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican said on Tuesday that gay marriage, abortion, lesbians wanting to bear children and a host of other practices it sees as threats to the traditional family were signs of "the eclipse of God."

A 60-page document, called "Family and Human Procreation," was issued just days after President Bush urged the Senate to pass a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

The document strongly restated many of the Roman Catholic Church's positions on sexuality, marriage and life but went further, saying the family today was more endangered than at any time before in history.

"The causes are diverse but the 'eclipse' of God, creator of man, is at the root of the profound current crisis concerning the truth about man, about human procreation and the family," said the document, prepared by the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family.

It said the family was under attack around the world, even in traditionally Christian cultures, by what it called "radical currents" proposing new family models.

It listed these threats as homosexual marriages, giving gay couples equal legal recognition as married heterosexuals, lesbians demanding the right to bear children through artificial insemination and gays who want to adopt children.

Bush, in his radio address last weekend, called for a constitutional amendment to keep "activist" judges from overturning efforts by some state legislatures to ban gay marriage.

Gay marriage has been an increasingly divisive issue in the United States since a Massachusetts court ruled in 2003 that the state legislature could not ban it, paving the way for America's first same-sex marriages the following year.

NEW ITALY GOVERNMENT DIVIDED

The issue of gay marriage and the recognition of unwed heterosexual couples is also one that Italy's new centre-left government will likely have to confront.

The coalition of Prime Minister Romano Prodi promises some form of recognition for unmarried couples but has so far stopped short of openly supporting gay marriage as part of its program.

However, some coalition parties back greater rights for homosexuals, including marriage, and the issue is widely expected to surface sooner or later.

Some in the center left support a legal recognition similar to that in France, which in 1999 granted all couples the right to form civil unions and have the right to joint social security, limited inheritance rights and other benefits.

Italy's powerful Roman Catholic Church opposes this.

Since his election last year, Pope Benedict has been accused by some politicians of interfering in domestic affairs by speaking out against gay marriage and legal recognition of unmarried heterosexuals.

Gay unions are already legal in several European countries, including traditionally Catholic Spain. Britain has introduced a law allowing gays to formalize their relationships.

In other parts of the document, the Vatican branded abortion an "abominable crime" and said it was "inconceivable" that it remained unpunished.

Abortion until the third month of pregnancy has been legal in Italy since 1978 but some conservative Catholics want to ban it again.

does anyone know if this document was begun before or after john paul 2?

ed

considered what some people say about a certain man leading a small state in the cente of rome, this document has some twisted humour.BTW,Benedict has been the leader of the modern version of the Inquisition, has opposed strongly to the traslation of the Dead Sea manuscripts and did suggest strongly to the american priests accused of having abused children to deny it strongly..
And then they wonder why many people are leaving the catholic church................
Besides, the roman church is violating the Italian costituion, and is mainly a matter of power, mor e thna ethics.
In Spain they've already lost the battle. When they did complain to the Spain ambassador,he did simply answer "our country is an aconfessional one".

Not to mention all the thigns the Church has tried to block the "da Vinci code" movie....................even mentioning it during the Easter speech..............while there wer e WAY more important things to discuss and warn people about.

Considering how powerful and timeless the Gopsel message is,that's pretty sad.

Religion is the primary reason that people feel the need for "spirituality" to complete their lives. Hundreds of years in a society that view religion (and thus, something "beyond" the ordinary life) as something good and natural pretty much instills a mindset in its populace.

So while you might separate spirituality, divinity and religion, I do not. They are irrevocably linked.

I think the new pope, is a fucking nonintelligent jerk, who is almost as extreme as the Nazis. Sorry if I offend anyone, but he has a screw loose about the size of the screw in Frankensteins monsters head.

Well I don´t know, and I really don´t care. I think the vatican, should shut the fuck up, and grow up. Since they have billions in money, and do nothing to help other people, and well many churches do that. But I couldn´t care less. Since I think it is insane.

Why can´t humans behave good to eachother. And respect eachother, and I wish someday that Denmark will be a good country again, since once we were a pioneer country, and now we are a country filled up with prejudice.

Sorry for being bitter, but I think Denmark is in some ways a rotten place to live nowadays, and if I had the right to vote for the gay rights , in Denmark (if there ever came a public vote). I would vote yes for human rights to gay people.

Hm, and what is your say in this issue, Sammy?

God deserves to be eclipsed.

Sorry, but the bullshit coming from Rome has nothing to do with my idea of spirituality -- which involves worshipping women in bed. Couldn't we just throw the Pope to the lions and be done with it?

Why sully divinity or spirituality by linking it with tyranny?

O RLY? I have a simpler way of defining divinity: if you can survive being shot through the head with a .45, you're probably a god.

That may be the case, but most people have strange ideas about all sorts of things. Two theology classes should correct such erroneous beliefs for anyone who is paying attention.

Religion is just another way for a few people to control a lot of people.

I wouldn't mind getting my hands on that document, it'd save me money on toilet paper!
