I have been watching the debate about Gay Marriage play out in the national media for the past few months...watched how the courts and the legislatures of several states, including Massachusetts and California, are going back and forth over the rights of Gays in American society.
Having heard the opposing viewpoints from the talking-heads on the news, I wanted to get the opinions of people here on Lit.
So I put it to all of you: Should Gay Marriage be legalized in the United States, affording all gay couples the same rights, benefits, and status as heterosexual couples; Or should there be a Constitutional Amendment banning Gay Marriage and establishing that only marriage between a man and a woman is sanctioned by the Federal government?

Let us all know what you are thinking...and try and remain civil...I know passions run deep about this subject, but I think this should be a lively and courteous debate.

the feds need to stay out of it they should not have the right to say who should and should not be married but at the same time if your gay to not push your life style on me ;)

Civil Unions

Are Civil Unions the answer to the question of Gay Marriage? Is the idea of two people of the same sex marrying too much for the psyche of America to accept? What are your thoughts?

Gay marriages should be allowed and all governmental benefits of being a married couple should be taken away. Marriage is basically a christian concept in the eyes of the US and it should fall under "Seperation of church and state".

Finally someone that thinks the way that I do. I think that Civil Unions would be a good thing and included in them would be the pre nupt and the division of property in case of the union not being renewed.

I also think that the unions should have a time limit and be renewed on a regular basis.
