Gas stations in the US

Most credit card companies here in the U.S. are supplying customers with a card with a chip, but most retailers do not have the machine to read these so they are still being swiped. I was reading an article just the other day that said the credit card companies would not be libel if someone stole your information if the chip card was used at a place that did not have a chip reader. The person would have to recoup their losses from the place of business.

I'm pretty sure it's the business that's left to recoup however they can, not the card user.

The card owner isn't liable for any amount if it's theft. It used to be they aren't liable for anything over $50, but that changed about 10 years ago. The same with debit cards. In most cases the bank will have your money back in your account the next day.

Um. That's what the pin code is for, innit? Safe enough for the ATM.

If you have a pin code you choose "debit" not "credit". Simple, if you take the time to understand the local rules. It always surprises me when those from other parts of the world yelp and moan about the quintessential " American tourist" because they demand we know all the local customs, laws and rules, but it doesn't apply in reverse. Go figure.

Chip and pin isn't anywhere near as common in the US as it is in more civilised countries.

So did I and there was still nonsens to deal with.

"You have to pay in advance. How much gas do you want?"

"Until it's full."

"How much is that?"

"Dunno yet, it's half-ish full now."

"So, how big is the tank?"

"Hang on, lemme call Herz and fucking ask them."

At home I roll up, fill, then pay what I owe.

I guess pump and dash is a major problem o'er there?

Really? This is confusing? You can't figure out how to handle the situation? Below is the simplest, quickest answer. Whether you like it or not, that's the way it's done. I rarely let small things like this stress me. I save that for the real problems.

Paying in advance is nonsense?

Throw a stack on the counter...go fill up...collect change.

Cash isn't that difficult until you try making big purchases.....then it's a felony crime.

I have 4 zip codes.
I live at none of them.
Most of my cards are through my "wife's" address. There is the physical address zip code that not even the PO recognizes any more, but most CC companies demand the physical address.
The dmv demands we use the zip from a town 20 mls away cuz it's the county seat.
She gets her mail at a PO box in another town, and I get my mail at a town 100 miles away.
I have no idea which card has which zip code.
I text my "wife", and say, what fukken zip code do I need for this fukken card?
She texts back, "I have no fukken idea"
It's like roulette.
I start sweating as soon as my gas needle gets below half.
Then I spend a half hr at the pump trying cards and numbers.
It's just like vegas.
I almost never win.

Aw.....so much intelligence, so little common sense.

Denny------------- Yep that's what the guy behind the counter wearing a bed sheet and white towel on his head said.

...even though it is a credit card? Mkay.

Eh well. I'll bring my debit card with me next time, I guess.

Never encountered any Americans having similar mishaps here. Except one guy reading Celcius and dressing for Farenheit. But that was not on account of him being American, I think. Dude was just a moron.

For businesses without the equipment to use the chips in cards, the credit card companies will not reimburse the business for any fraudulent charges made when using the swipe or keying in the card number. The business is now forced to eat the loss in those cases.

When I worked in the bookstore in the US, the number of people that hadn't signed the back of their credit card was extraordinary. Their rationale was "then people could copy my signature if I lose my card". They didn't seem to understand the logical ridiculousness of that.

I put "Picture ID Required" instead of my signature. You'd be surprised how many don't even ask for that ID even when they do look at the back of the card.
I've put "ask for ID on cards for years and never been asked...
I pay cash.....no tech problems of any kind.
Yep.

Way back in my younger days, I was hired to be the weekend night manager at a full service gas station.
But I was the one on duty, so I guess I was manager of me.
Anyway, a car would pull in, I'd go gas it up while kids ran in and ran out with half the store down their pants.
After a week, payday, they said I owed them 125 bucks for missing merchandise. No paycheck.
That was the end of my gas station managerial career.

How dare you accuse me of intelligence!

But I still get my money back.

Unless you're going straight back to the rental house, is it really important to fill the tank completely?

I mean, you use a car so you don't have to do so much walking, right? Lowball your outlay, run the pump until it stops, then leave. Repeat when the tank runs low again.

Y u so ass backwards?

Roll up. Try to use credit card. Get asked for zip code for some retarded reason. Not pin code. Zip code. Where I live. Say whatever and enter zip code. Get told your zip code is not a zip code. Remember you have a foreign card and adress and it probably therefore doesn't work, in spite of the card working with a pin everywhere else in the country and on the planet. Resort to cash. Walk in. Pay for what you blindly guess your rental needs. Walk out. Fill up. Realize you guessed too low. Walk back in. Make another guess. Walk out. Pump some more. Realized you guessed too high. Walk back in. Try to settle the difference. Met by moron who don't seem to see what the problem is. Decide you can't be arsed with this bullshit. Flip the bird. Walk back out. Drive off.

Haa haa.
American banking seems determined to stay stuck in the 70's, makes it a royal PITA for what should be simple things. Try changing Canadian money in Madison Wisconsin or Atlanta Georgia, JFC what a PITA.
I've always done a lot of road trips, and for a country that loves it's Interstates & guz guzzling mile munchers, you'd think the US would have it's gas station shit together. Meh, I just overpay in cash now and make the second trip back to the cashier. Or keep the trip odo accurate and get pretty good at guessing with some quick maths.

What REALLY grinds me is how deliberately SLOW the damn pumps in the US are. Just so you are forced to listen to the same asinine commercial three times before you're full. Not to mention that in the North the volume you pay for has been "adjusted for temperature", but in the South no fucking way.

Not to mention the air pumps if you have a low tire. Last stop wanted $1.50 for 3mins of air. Shit I want to go biodiesel now.

I have no idea which card has which zip code.

You do know where the bill for each card goes, I hope. Wherever the bill goes, that is the zip code asked for. I only have two credit cards and one Debit card: I never use the debit card and when I do it asks for a PIN, both credit cards are billed to the same address.

The solution to your problem is to change the billing address so that all the bills go to the same zip code.

Pretty much. So that post was a 'tell'. (or bullshit) Take your pick.
