In reality net profit margins are up slightly. In Exxon's case to 6.2%. During the height of the Wuhan Flu lock down ALL of the energy companies went through a cycle of reducing operating expenses. Reduced operating expenses coupled with increased demand yields higher net profits. Going forward the companies are going to have to increase operating expense spending to ramp up production to meet the demands. This is going to be mitigated by the run away inflation over which they have no control. As costs go up, so will prices.

The administration can sit and run it's mouth all day long about the "evil oil companies" but the only solution is to increase supply and they are doing nothing about that beyond begging others nations to bail their asses out.
