garage band for the ipad (yea real out of place)

anyone use the garage band app for recording music from instruments? i used the ipad mic to record a base guitar track but then when i plugged my guitar direct into the ipad and tried to record an over dub i couldnt hear anything through the speaker, not the already recorded tracks or the guitar going in direct. is there a solution to this problem? i'd like to record leads over things using the ipad (i use pc software at times as well) but i cant exactly do it 'blind'. thanks

Please describe what you mean by plugging "direct into the ipad."

You need a USB device to input audio. The little Apple microphone isn't really adequate. And you should use a decent set of speakers for playback, not the earbuds.
