Hey, everyone. Both 3113 and I started threads yesterday asking about the legitimacy of Erotic Dreams Publishing's offers to us to publish some of our work. We got very helpful responses from our fellow AHers. By way of thanks from me to y'all for that I thought that I would post the email that I sent them inquiring after what rights to anything they published they would want, along with their response to me, so that should any of you get a simular offer, you'll already know the answer to this.

This was my email to them...
Greetings.

I admit that I'm very interested in your offer after having checked
out your site, but I would like some information, please.

I could find nothing on your site that spoke specifically of copy
rights. What rights, exactly, would I be granting you should I agree
to having my story published by your company?

You say on your site that you post a story for the duration of their
run, and at the end of the series, put it into ebook form so
subscribers can download for free for two months. If that's the
extent of the rights to the story that you're asking for, I would
definitely be amenable.
Tom Collins

And this was their reply to me...
Tom,

The only right you give ED zine is the non-exclusive right to post
your story in our online zine for the period of one to two years. Our
contract states two years, but an author can email us and ask us to
take it down after a year if they wish.

There's nothing on the site about copyright because copyright remains
with the author, and it's posted on each story that it does. You're
only granting us the privilege of putting your story up on the zine
and that's it. You don't even have to take the story down from any
other places you might have it posted.

The statement about posting for a duration of a run and downloadable
ebook is for Shades of Dreams, our serialized stories subscription.
That is for stories that are exclusive to Erotic Dreams Publishing.

That wouldn't apply to your story since it will be posted in our free
to read Erotic Dreams zine and won't be exclusive to EDP.

Please let me know if you are still interested.

Sable

Kudos to you

Thanks for posting that, Tom. I had seen both threads and read with interest. Congrats. It's always great to get insight into how things work (i.e. one part of the publishing industry).

It would be great to see more of this at AH.

Thanks, JPM. I'm glad you've found it informative.

I just hoped to stop anyone's wondering about what this publishing house would expect in the way of rights. They've started going through Lit's stories, looking for new authors, so others of us are bound to get offers from them.

...That would be me. Today I got an offer from EDP's Sable St. Germain. They want to buy my story 'the Pagans .'

Curiously, Sable writes, "We pay a flat fee of $20" & in Tom's 5/29/07 post, they offered him $30; and in Jenny_Jackson's 5/26 post, they offered her $10. Seems darn unfair to Jenny!

I've written to them asking for more info. If I find out how they decide what to pay, I will post here.

Unless of course, some1 among youse knows the answer? Or anything else about this company?

I was contacted today and went to their website. Here is their pay scale. . .
Currently at ED we have turnaround of two months.

When stories and poems are accepted, we will notify the authors by email, and we will assign an editor to work with the author on any possible rewrites.

The pay scale is a flat fee as follows:
3K words $10.
6K words $20.
10 - 15K words $30.
16 - 20K words $35.
21 - 30K words $50.
31 - 40K words $70.

Erotic Dreams Zine stories are not considered exclusive to ED. Contracts are for two years; however author may email us after one year to ask the story be taken down. Copyright remains with author. If the story is not posted elsewhere, we ask you do not post it anywhere else for one year.

Shades of Dreams stories will be exclusive to ED for a two year contract. Shades of Dreams stories are also made available to subscribers as a free downloadable ebook for two months, and sold in ebook and/or print/magazine form through ED. (Larger stories of 10,000 works and over only)

Erotic Dreams Magazine stories will be exclusive to ED for a two year contract.

Thanks, Red. :)

I guess my next question would be: has anyone here accepted a contract with ED? What were they like to work with?

You're welcome.

I haven't accepted yet, but the emails have been forthcoming and informative, all my questions having been answered.

I've contracted two stories with them & have agreed to write an exclusive F/F piece for their inaugural print magazine.

They're good people.

That's the impression I am getting. They are interested in a chapter 3 to my Idle Hands stories if I feel up to writing a third one. I believe I'll sign with them to sell the ones they are interested in.

Howdy, folks. :)

I'm one half of the ownership of ED (Erotic Dreams). We're published authors in addition to running the ezine, so we understand concerns that authors have. We gladly answer all questions, and we hope that everyone's experience with us is a good one. :)

My partner, Sable, has been the one combing through Lit, and I've read everything thus far. We have some brilliant stories and authors coming our way. I'm thrilled!

And yes, the payscale is based on word count. :)

(I have stories up at Lit as well, though I've not posted on the forum in AGES.) If anyone has further questions, please don't hesitate to contact Sable or myself (kay@eroticdreamspublishing.com).

Thanks!

Hehe. I'm gonna pull my old crap when I get some nice new stuff ready to post. I started a quick chain story peice that's developed into a behemoth on me... I'm gonna have to break it up into pairings at this rate. But its nice to have the muse back!

I’m the Sable that’s been contacting authors. I should answer a few questions here about ED.

First we offer 3 types of contracts. 1 is electronics rights only and non-exclusive. That means you give us the right to post your story in the ED zine, and you don’t have to take it down from Literotica. All rights remain with the author and that is posted on the same page as the story. Those stories are free to read to our members, and membership is free.

The second contract is electronic rights only and exclusive. That means the story would be taken down from Literotica. Most of those stories go into our Shades of Dreams subscription stories. We only ask for electronic rights on the story.

The 3rd contract is for electronic and magazine rights only, and exclusive. The author keeps paperback and hardback rights. Those stories are for our print magazine and mini-magazines.

I know the pay scale isn’t great. But as we grow, we’re hoping that grows too. We are competitive with one of the other publishers that does publish short stories. They offer $10 for 5 K and up and $30 for 10k - 15k.

If anybody has any questions, always feel free to email me or Kay. As was stated, we are both published authors in our right and definitely understand any concerns authors have as to our legitimacy.

Sable.
