I first came upon this term when I stumbled upon an anime video of beautiful Amazonian women endowed with large cocks and balls. The word futinari means hermaphroditism in Japanese and refer to a popular type of character in sexual anime. From my understanding it is more of a hermaphroditic term than something referring to cross dressers or transgender people. In fact it may even be it’s own gender. But this is from my limited understanding.

I think you're correct in that futas are not crossdressers. Most of the futanari images that I've seen of the very well endowed beautiful Amazons. I've also seen others with the hermaphroditic combo of sex organs. I think they're very provocative and hot!!!

It's not about a trans or cross dressed male at all.

I mean, I'm not really a consumer or fan of the genre, but you can't help it intersecting your awareness these days. In my limited impression, these characters are presented as women, born to hermaphroditic destiny. To be honest I don' know if the futa anime that's out there even include backstories or origin stories about why they are this way, but they're not male or FTM characters.

Maybe think of it as a kind of magical realism, where weird shit happens and it's utterly unexplained, it just is what it is.
