There's been some talk on other threads about viruses on lit writers' computer (nearly all the stories sent to me have viruses on them) so I thought I would pass this along. A couple of hours ago I got an email from hahaha@sexyfun.net with a snow white blurb and an attachment (first warning). My software immediately nabbed the viruse attached to the file and traced it back to Casey Blackburn 137.118.8.61 at http://www.sexyfun.net. Of course the email address is an unknown one and my software immediately reported the source to a central database. But, guys and dolls, look out for this crap. Don't open these moronic files unless you scan for viruses first (it'll go past your firewall since it's email with just a file)

Anybody else get stuff like this on a regular basis?

I usually don't open anything from people or places I am not familiar with. I am also leary of opening things sent to me with attachments, even from friends, unless it is something I asked them to send me. There is now a virus out which starts out with hahaha the seven dwarfs...I have heard this wipes out everything and makes it so you can't even boot up your puter...

Yep...

...that's the one. My biggest mystery is how they found my email address as it came to the one I don't usually give out to anyone. If you have Norton installed you can save the attachment to a folder then right click on the file to tell Norton to scan it. You should be safe if you don't run the file, but like you, I generally trash anything that I don't recognise as coming from friends. Still, a lot of my friends keep trying share their germs with me! I'm glad I didn't have a moment of carelessness with this one! Thanks for the info on it.

I too have gotten that hahaha@sexyfun.net. I got it 3 times at the E-Mail address I use for Literotica, and 1 time each at the other two pop3 accounts I have for my domain. And this was all in the space between earlier today when I logged on and about 10 minutes ago when I logged back on.

If your name is on a header and the receiver has added the header to their address book you are lumped into a group..that's how you keep getting it most likely. I have also heard from several friends that McCafee does not alert on this virus...just be careful when opening mail from people/places you don't know or are sure of...

Seize the day eh...

...I hate spending money on software, but I've learned that unless you update virus software on an almost weekly basis you run a high risk catch finding something that it can't detect. It seems to update the profiles automatically every ten days or so. McAfee, I understand, works the same way. I guess it just doesn't do to have outdated protection with all the computer pricks out there.

I'm not real sure about this as I am not into programming, but I think McCafee doesn't recongize it because it is an .exe file. CD, try going to Zdnet.com, they have some programs you can download for free. They give a detailed description of each program and they are all rated. I too, hate spending money on programs, but I have gotten many good programs from this site.

I have gotten that Snow White thing at the email address I don't give anyone. MacAffee misses a lot of stuff. I got a kak worm a few days after buying my new computer & couldn't get rid of it until we installed the Norton. I automatically delete everything if I don't recognize the sender.

Actually...

...I'm a bonafide, registered, paid-through-the-gills owner of all my software. I bought the Norton Utilities and Norton Internet Security off Symantec's web site after a thirty day trial convinced me it was about as good as you could get. It updates automatically and so far has nabbed about a dozen different viruses, most in .exe files and even some of those "macro" ones that Outlook was getting. It's getting to be such a bother. Even Outlook has security updates every few weeks to close some other loophole the rocket scientists at Microsoft overlooked.

I still hate paying for it...hee hee. Oh...been using ZDnet for years and years. Used to have to pay $6 a month when I was on Compuserve, but it was THE place to go for shareware and utilities that were ever so useful. There's another site that's handy to have around called http://www.driverguide.com which has drivers, utilities, software patches, and more for just about anything you can imagine. Really useful when you buy a piece of hardware but don't get docs or software with it. You can usually find the software posted on there. Sort of a literotica for geeks. Great place.

Cheers!

I am so bad

That I delete all email that comes with you will like this, this is funny, thought you would care, FWD, etc., even when it comes from people I know. I do not open it up unless it is actual communication. Just yesterday, someone send me that now ancient piece by Charles Heston. Well, I maen to tell you I deleted that thing so fast that back in my day, them young whipersnappers wouldn't have sent me that damn thing twice... mumble, mumble, mumble...

I did not set up an email account here because of this very reason. A friend of mine got a virus from email. If cost me but I had a tech set up my computer to place all email into a folder that scans attachments too. One crashed computer was enough for me.

I should say...

...as a matter of great curiosity that the email didn't come from this address but from my main one which is never, NEVER given out to anybody but friends. I think someone mentioned earlier that it was probably lifted off someone else's "header" on which I was included.

As a matter of courtesy, for those of you who don't know this, when you copy emails to a long list of people you might want to use blind copies (BCC) rather than copies (CC) as this keeps your mailing list private. Whether it prevents this sort of problem though I couldn't say.

I always, if I plan on sending something on, copy and then paste the article, pic, etc. onto a new email, so the list of headers aren't there. I hate having to scroll thru paragraph after paragraph of headers.
