I certainly had one professor as an undergrad I had the hots for, but she was involved with her professor from her graduate school days!

For the women who have had relations with a professor, I'm curious - how did it unfold? Were you quite close and flirty with him while you were his student? or was it just after you left his classes that things heated up? Who initiated it, your or him? Did he ever indicate he was interested in you while you were a direct student of his?

I've always erred on the side of caution when it came to students who seemed overly flirty. I did have two who were quite explicit about what they wanted, but one was looking for a grade the other I thought was doing it on a dare that I refused both advances.

Even if the transaction is consensual, a change of mind by the female who then makes a charge will result in much worse consequences for the male professor. These days - it doesn't even have to go beyond the fantasy stage - some universities consider just an unsubstantiated charge of sexual harassment enough to fire an untenured male assistant professor and the stain of that charge ends your career in academia forever.

Toward the end of my career I never met with a female student in my office alone even if the door stayed open. I used conference rooms during times when the area was generally busy and had a female colleague stay close by. Academia is nuts these days - too many crazy people with political agendas just waiting to pounce. Nice fantasy - but reality would be very scary for a male professor who valued his career.

I do agree, the atmosphere has changed, as it rightly should. While we can fantasize about the flirtatious young coed teasing us, more often then not it was the lecherous professor making unwanted advances. And the transactional exchange of sex for grades was very often employed, tempting young women into relationships not of their own making. there are many, many stories floating around.

That being said, I don't find it as dire as you all. The fear of a false accusation is a red herring - not to say it hasn't happened, but it is more mythical than real, a discursive construct of men to complain that they no longer have free and easy access to women's bodies!

There remains many opportunities for flirtatious relationships, and sex if you want to go there. For me, that is a no-go area, at least while they are students at the same university. But it doesn't mean both students and professors, of whatever gender, cannot continue to enjoy a sexually charged environment. One just has to realize it isn't theirs to control and define anymore...
