I’ve got two Pop-up blockers running (the Goggle tool-bar and Pop-up Stopper by Panicware) and they’re still getting through. I must get like two or three a minute now for every minute I’m on the computer. But what’s worse, they’re now causing my computer to crash and lock-up, and I’ve lost pages of of stuff I’ve written. The computer’s almost unusable, and the only way I can post this message is by writing it in MSWord and then cutting and pasting it into the Lit editor, because my Lit editor is unusable due to the Pop-ups screwing it up.)

I know that they’ve put some sort of enabling program on my computer. Is there any way to find this program and get rid of it? Or do I just have to throw the fucking computer away and get a new one? Golden Palace Casino comes up and locks up the whle computer whenever I start it up. I’ve uninstalled this piece of shit app but it apparently downloads itself afresh

And do these assholes really think I’m going to patronize any one their scum sucking clients after they’ve trashed my new PC? They and their families and pets should all get leprosy and die.

that sounds all very virusy to me Dr M......do you have anti virus software? I'm not a technical type person but I had a similar problem a while back which was a virus and my hubby killed it with a virus killing thing..I am sure someone else will give you some better advice than this!!!

visit download.com, search for adaware. download it, run it, remove all the spyware and adware.

google tool bar is plenty of pop up protection after you clean out your registry with adaware.

Thanks, Spokane. I'd downloaded Adaware 6 from Lit some months ago, but I always thought spyware was pretty unobtrusive. I mean, I figured they reported where you went, but I didn't think they slapped ads up onto your computer too.

I ran Adaware and it found 267 things running, so I quarantined them all. I got rid of all my cookies too, and so far so good. Fingers crossed.

EL, I have a contract with MacAfee, so I think that takes care of most viruses, and I never open mail from people I don't know, just immediately trash it.

Thanks a lot guys. You just saved my sanity, what there is left of it.

dr.M,

You should also download Spybot. It will pick up a few things that Ad-Aware misses. It also *immunizes* your computer against certain known adware/spyware. I use both spybot and adaware because each one detects things that the other doesn't.

Well, they’re back. I ran Adaware and Spybot both yesterday, and they found a whole raft of crap which I’ve gotten rid of, and things were pretty good for awhile. But now they’re back, and I saw fucking “Golden Casino” loading when I started the PC this morning, and the computer just locked up while I was posting to Lit, and so I lost a long message.

I suppose the only option is to just strip the computer bare and reload Windows, but I never got a Windows disc, so I can’t do that without shelling out big $$$.

As I said: fucking pop-ups.

I had a trojan that did similar things last year, only it used to connect the internet itself and download pop ups (Winserv)
Check Control/Alt/ Delete and see only legit programs are running and go to your start up menu via msconfig and check what is starting automatically. Sometimes you can find the evil doer this way.

If you know the name of your 'bug", do a google search for removal advice. Much of this advice is on the net, you just have to find it. Plenty have had your problems before and they are keen to share their knowledge.

I use the adblocker from Guidescope.com which checks a database of blocked ad providers online everytime your computer is asked to download an ad.
It does ads on web pages and almost all popups. You can add more to the list by reporting them.
Even on Lit, I just get grey squares where all the smut ads are.

Good luck and keep asking if you still have trouble, I have always found good advice round here.

your browser was hijacked, PM me and i will help ya fix it, you probably got the coolweb virus err i mean advertising program.

wright a virus and you get 20 years in jail.
wright a virus, call it an add ... you get rich.

go to www.mozilla.com and download FIREBIRD and use it as your new web browser. It's much more efficient than Internet Explorer, has a eigger viewing window, and you will never see another pop up ever again.

You don't have the Windows CD? I didn't know it was possible to own windows without having a CD.

Not long ago, I had the same problem as you. My computer came with a "restore CD" which made everything just like it was when I bought it. Now, I'm just really careful about what programs I download.

If you are using Windows XP, you might try using the "system restore" function. It can take your computer back to an earlier time. It won't delete normal files, but it will uninstall all programs that were installed after the restore point. Just goto Accessories, Sytem Tools, System Restore. Hopefully, you didn't turn the service off.

Come to think of it, with the bad karma they get, the "good" folks at Golden Casino probably have the pox! Continue the curse I say!

Do you have a way of restoring your hard drive? I got sucked in to the miscrosoft virus. I did a full restore on my compaq and it reset the hardrive back to all the originally settings.

Why oh WHY do people persist in running IE when mozilla is a simple and hassle free solution to the popup problem? :p

I run spybot once or twice a month to catch any stray stuff, but have come up clean 9 times out of 10. Lovely little thing, it is.

Perhaps, I'm not the only one who has a system that simply doesn't like Mozilla, Navigator, and other alternate browsers?

Wow, just downloaded Mozilla (had an earlier version several years ago). Not only does it stop the popups, but it's way faster than the good ole IE. Looks like the little E is going on vacation for a while on my computer.

Dr. M did you run the adware test from the lit mainpage? its supposed to detect if you have it and provide a link to where to go if you're infected, though i dont know if you can get there due to popups, might be worth a try though

Yes, I ran Adaware, Spybot, and Spywareblaster. They found nothing. I’m writing this offline in MSWord with IE closed. If IE is even running in the background, it will periodically hijack MSWord and lock my Caps Lock or CTRL key on or otherwise screw up what I’m working on.

When this happens, I can hit Alt Ctrl Delete at the see all these suspicious processes running and even using CPU space. Things with names like Udck1t.exe, OzaH.exe, K2Esdf.exe, and other things. If I shut them down they restart, but sometimes I can shut them off and get control of my keyboard back. But really, I don’t know what all those processes are, and I’m afraid I’ll delete something I need. I’ve searched for the names of the files (searching hidden files too) and come up empty, so I think they must be downloading everytime I start IE.

I could try to have the system repair itself or switch browsers, but then I’d lose all my links, right? And if I’ve got something hidden on my computer that downloads ads while I’m online, would a different browser change anything? Plus I’d lose all the stories and writing I have saved as Word files, which is considerable (about 6 months’ worth of work) I guess I should be backing thoseup anyhow, huh?

I’m ready to do something radical though. As I said, it’s just about impossible to do anything on line anymore, and it’s getting worse. Pretty soon IE will be totally useless to me.

Whatever’s going on, I suspect that it happened through my kids’ downloading music files from Diet KaZaa. I’m very cautious when I download anything, which is rare anyhow, and I never even open mail from people I don’t know, just immediately trash it.

It sounds like you've got something in your registry that is loading all this stuff. A program like Regcleaner will help you find and delete it while providing a restore function if you delete something you need.

Windows comes with a diagnostic program called Dr Watson. It can give you a list of what is running on your system and where it loaded from. Check your help menu for details on how to use it.

I've been using Mozilla for about a year now and will NEVER go back to IE if I have any choice in the matter. No pop ups, very customizable and easy to use. This coupled with Adaware and I've not problems, lol.
Oh- may want to snag a firewall too. Zone Alarm's a good one- locks programs in you computer from going out unless you say its okay and blocks others from coming in unles syou okay it. Use it when I'm leaving the puter on to download from a bit-torrent file.

dr.M,

System restore won't get rid of any stories that you have written. It only gets rid of things that you have installed (or that have installed themselves) on your computer. I'm pretty sure that is the way it works. I have used system restore before and not lost any pics that I had downloaded from my digital camera so your stories should be safe.

I used mozilla but I like crazybrowser better. No popups there either, and their graphics are great. Also I have spykiller which scans everytime I boot up...

I use IE with the Google toolbar, and I no longer get any popups. It even keeps track of how many it blocks. 682 so far.
