Lucas is my youngest's middle name...I wanted it for his first.

When I need good basic names I tend to fall back on Dan or Michael. Okay, maybe "fall back" was a poor choice of phrase.

Michael gives a sort of potential nobility, and you can always go with Mike if you need him to be really prosaic.

Dan - Daniel also offers this same sort of vibe.

Ken's good too. Nice basic Anglo-Saxon monosyllable. As is James.

I like to figure out approximately how old the character is then look up the most popular names the approximate year they were born in. There are lots of sites with baby names, and some of them have the lists for past years.

Most of those last ones are pretty 'American' names, actually, with the exception of Adam and Jake, those first ones are too. He has to be a buttoned-up English dude

I think I;m going with Andrew. I would pick Adam, but I know one of those as well and I'm already using his career for the character. if I use the name, too, people are gonna think it's based on him

If I didn;t have to take men I actually know into the equation it would be easy to find substitute names, it's trying to ignore the Johns, James, Adams, Bens that gets me into trouble when I need a good plain man's name, because those would all be my alternatives.

I did actually write a fantasy about a guy once and forgot to change his name. And he saw it.
Talk about embarrassing.
