Frozen Meat?

A while back I asked folk for info on freezing bread. Now, I'm back with another question that's going to seem odd and perhaps silly to a few of you...frozen meat. You have to understand, I grew up in a household where my mom was big on "fresh!" and never froze anything outside of ice cream; also, my household has always been small, and I live only a few blocks away from a grocery story. So there's never been any real reason to stock up my freezer for emergency meals. It's not like I'm going to be suck with five teenagers during a snow storm and need to haul out the frozen steaks to feed everyone.

In short, I never learned the secrets of frozen food outside of a bag of Green Giant peas and some chicken stock.

So, here's the deal. I made turkey burgers. Had two raw burgers left over and decided to freeze them. I wrapped them up good in Glad "press n' seal" wrap (love that stuff!) and put them into a plastic "freezer" bag (i.e., a plastic bag that's supposedly good for frozen food).

How long will those burgers last? And if I want to finally cook 'em up...er...what do I do? Do I defrost them in the frige all day? Defrost out on the counter for a few hours? Or just throw them icy-hard on the grill?

Help educate me in the secrets of frozen foods....

They'll probably last a couple of months if they were fresh when you got them. If you have a Foreman grill, you can put them right on there frozen. But, if you want to pan fry them or put them on the BBQ grill, I'd thaw them out in the fridge the night before.

And I would add a big hoofs-up for cooking them along with the rest that you plan to eat and then nuking them when you want them. We often do this when we're cooking on the barbecue; it's lovely to be able to defrost them some rainy day when we can't be bothered with charcoal fussery, and still have the lovely flavor of it.

Frozen meat will keep a long time. I seem to recall reading that a year is still not beyond the beck of hygiene / food safety. However, the freezer is a very dry environment, so if any part of a food item becomes exposed to the air, it will "spoil" in the sense of becoming too dried-out to be pleasant to eat. It sounds like you've sealed your burgers up very tightly, so they should be good for a long while.

Food that has been sealed tightly can have its defrosting time considerably reduced by sitting it under a trickle of cold running water in the sink. Sometimes we also use the microwave on very low power - by which, of course, I mean that I use the microwave on very low power, and the SO blasts cheerfully away at "10." ;)

Many thanks to you both for your wise advice.

We do indeed have a Foreman grill (though it's probably time to "upgrade" the old thing). How long would you want to cook frozen turkey burgers as compared to thawed turkey burgers?

The thread title makes me cross my legs and hunch over.

I like my meat unfrozen. ;)

so I jomped out into the blizzard with megan and I took off my pants quickly. She spun around just in time to see my "frozen meat" before I stuffed it back in my pants and ran in doors.. she followed, her pendelous bosum swaying to and fro as she ran after me!

To thaw meat [or fish or poultry] safely, take it out of the freezer and place in the refrigerator. If the meat was frozen in a plastic bag fine, else use a pan or dish underneath to prevent juices from dripping onto other foods. A one-inch steak will thaw in 12 to 14 hours. Plan on 4 to 7 hours per pound to thaw a large roast and 3 to 5 hours per pound for a small roast. A one-inch thick package of ground beef will defrost in 24 hours.

For quick thawing, use the microwave oven according to manufacturer's directions and then cook defrosted food immediately.

Never defrost meat, poultry or fish on the kitchen counter or in warm water. Bacteria multiply rapidly at temperatures 40 degrees - 140 degrees F.

Don't try to cook frozen meat directly on a grill. By the time you get the inside up to temp, the outside will resemble the charcol you are cooking with. Defrost first in the refrigerator or in a microwave.

Don't. nuke them first to defrost, then grill them. .

I once helped eat a leg of pork which I was told had been in the freezer for at "least 3 years" It was ok but I might not have eaten it with prior knowledge. :)

So megan told me to thaw my frozen meat [or fish or poultry] safely, she said to take it out of the freezer and place in the refrigerator.

My cock was still cold but I complied.

She grabbed my meat and started to lick underneath to prevent my juices from dripping onto other foods.

A one-inch thicmk Tubesteak like mine will thaw a few minutes.. Plan on a warm wet sloppy blow job to get it good and ready.,

after that I started to pound her large rump for about 3 to 5 hours

Megan told me to Never defrost my meat on the kitchen counter or in warm water. Bacteria multiply rapidly at temperatures 40 degrees - 140 degrees F.

WEll I agreed.. I certainly don't want any bacteria on my large cock. so...

oh what..this isn't one of those stories where everyone adds a part! I'm such an idiot!

sorry sorry

Megan said as she covered sethp's subject with a blanket. then she crept back into the pantry to find some chocolate syrup....

to be continued...

A word of caution. I've heard that poultry does not keep as long as beef or pork. I thought I read somewhere 3 months is the limit.

Thanks for that footnote. I'll try to cook the turkey burgers within 3 months.

Well good, depending on the age of the teenagers that might be illegal.

Now, you can only freeze most meats in a regular temp freezer for 6 months safely, 8 months pushing, and anything over 1 year don't even feed it t your dog.

Lots of people don't know that, and don't die, and don't know what is wrong except that maybe they contracted swine flu as they sit on the toilet while throwing up in a trashcan.

Now that you're ready to eat.

You can defrost whichever way is easiest, thawing in the refrigerator is safe because if you wait to long its still chilled and not going bad. Fast thaw on the counter or under trickling water (not hot) or superfast thaw in the microwave on defroster setting. The microwave will often screw it up, edges start cooking while middle is still defrosting.

My personal opinion is that turkey burgers suck, so why freeze, but to each his/her own.

Remember wash your hands after cooking before sex, thats safe sex.

See ya, Lisa.
