I was watching as the New York authorities called in the heavy equipment to facilitate faster removal of the debris from the WTC. It made me wonder why they took so long. Think about it. If there were any survivors isn't it more likely that they would be found under the rubble? Those atop the pile fell almost a hundred stories, not likely to be many survivors there.

It may have seemed callous but they should have called on the heavy equipment right from the start and removed everything as fast as possible to get to the basement and sub-basements where the likelihood of someone still being alive was greatest. Keep the cameras away because the recovery of bodies using such a method would have been hard to watch, but they were dead and we needed to get to the bottom quickly in case someone survived.

Also remember there are still two commercial aircraft in the pile with their Flight Data Recorders that the authorities will want to get at as soon as possible.

Believe it or not, but I think they are still calling this a "rescue" mission. Unless I missed something since last night, they have yet to officially switch to "recovery" status.
