-What different kinds of masters are there?
there are as many different kinds of masters as there are boyfriends. they are just people, and as such their styles and expectations will vary. i suggest getting to know any prospectives as a person before you take it a step further.

-What should a sub be expected to do?

that again depends on who they are in a relationship with and what sort of relationship it is.

Master once told me that the core of my duties was "just do as your fucking told"

-Can online relationships work?

well, what do you want out of it?

are you looking for a fling? something on the side? a stable relationship? a LDR (long distance relationship) where you go visit them and vice versa? a relationship where you have no contact offline? a relationship where you would consider moving to bring the relationship offline and into real life?

my relationship started as a LDR, but we weren't limited to online contact, and visited each other every chance we got. about a month or so ago i relocated and moved in with him. our relationship works, but it was never strictly online, if you see what i mean.

it all depends on what you expect.

Convenient, one answer will cover this - every PYL is into different things and every PYL expects their pyl to do different things. There is no hard-and-fast rule on either. I know that may not seem particularly useful, but it's probably better in the long run than if I lied and said "all Masters are into super-hardcore shit. In fact, half of them can't even get it up if their slaves aren't bleeding".

Because you're inevitably going to ask, PYL stands for Pick Your Label and is used here to mean dominants, Masters, tops, all of the various different names people use for themselves. It's used to avoid the squabbling over whether person X qualifies as a Master or whether they're better labeled as a dominant because of what they're into or what they expect from a relationship. The submissive counterpart is pyl, lowercase.

The third question, I'm going to hand over to one of the many, many people here whose relationships are either entirely or primarily online.

The third question, I'm going to hand over to one of the many, many people here whose relationships are either entirely or primarily online.

see, i never thought of my relationship as online, only LDR, for which i used the internet as a great resource to stay in touch with my Master. so maybe you should take my above response with a grain of salt.

I won't go into the first two questions as they've pretty much been covered.

As to can online work? The simple answer is yes. More complex, depends what you want out of it.

Jounar and I have been involved for nearly 4 years. We did start out with basic online only status, and over time it's just developed. The key is to always be completely honest with what you want and need out of the relationship.

Some people do not want to be involved outside of the online reality or fantasy. There is a difference. Some people just want to play a fantasy role online, get the kinks out with out disrupting every day life. Much like a game. On the other hand, some have relationships that are every bit as real as ones offline, but do not wish for them to extend to offline status. Different situations, different reasons, but both are perfectly acceptable as long as all parties are aware of what's expected of the relationship and where it will and won't go. Beware though, a would venture to say that a majority of these situations are people who are cheating on a SO. If you're okay with that grand, but be prepared for sudden dissapearances with out warning.

A great many of us take our online relationships and move into offline situations, even to the point of moving in with the other and marriage. Some are happy just making trips and visiting the other. For myself personally there are plans to close the gap, but it is a very long process, and not one to take any step lightly.

There are just as many online relationships as there are offline relationships. Just like finding the perfect partner offline, the key to online relationships is comunication and both parties knowing and understanding the grounds of the relationship. If you're expecting to find some one who will eventually take you on and move you in with them, don't look for some one who stresses "online only". A simple thing that can cause huge problems.

But at any rate, good luck with your journey. :)

Thank you so much =).
You've all gave me alot to think about

(wonder how big my headache will be..)

Love,
Laura.

Once the initial headache goes away, you might want to consult The BDSM Library and see which topics interest you, which make you shudder in ecstacy at the mere thought of them, and which make you shudder in primal nausea at their titles. Review at least some of the information and threads linked in the first two categories.

Another thread of interest to you might be the Distance Domination Support thread, where folks involved in both online and offline distance D/s relationships discuss some of the issues they've run into.

Then wander through the BDSM Talk Forum (where you initially posted this thread) and peruse topics that tweak your interest, and maybe even wander into the BDSM Café, which deals with some of the same topics - and many others, often not related at all to BDSM - in, shall we say, a lighter tone?

Good luck with your research, and welcome to our world!

Well, Canada DOES have very sexy beautiful women.
So, of course the men would LOVE to control them, dont you think?

But as i've heard, men are different. Some like blondes, some like brunnettes. Some like big breasts, some like little.

Men are very complicated. All a women wants is something nice and hard ;]

Oh, and maybe some good/smart conversation once in awhile.

So diamonds and a chat eh?

Is it just me or are all the subbies in Canada? :(

We have subbie farms in the Great White North and the breed flourishes. It's all that fresh air and pure water, I think. Maybe it's also the salmon, hard to say. Many of our subbies are exported in exchange for television shows and good Mexican salsa but we always keep a solid breeding stock for future generations.

I was a free range, organic subbie, which explains my proclivity for wandering and my dislike of leather and dungeons.

You might want to consider a move north, B. Mind you, our hamsters are fricken huge and eat people alive.

not to mention the canadian trapdoor alligators

Insight would be nice.

Apologies for the mini-hijack. If you hang around here long enough you'll see that the folks on this board like to play. It's all good fun, no disrespect intended. I think the advice you've been given thus far is lots to get started with and I know if you have any further questions there will always be a lot of folks willing to help out.

Me, I'm just a joker. Ignore me. Or throw rocks at me, (that's what everyone else does).

Canada? West coast? East coast? Or the bit in the middle? I'm from BC but living far, far away.

Insight would be nice.

How are we supposed to help you any more than we have? You asked three really ambiguous and open-ended questions, there are no answers any more concrete than the ones we've already offered.

I have found this very useful as I have just been in a short online relationship that didn't work.
I am a new sub. Well I don't even know for sure I am one. I relate to being submissive and thought online would be a good way to find out

But I will use the advice here to guide me from now on.
