French government collapses in no-confidence vote

French lawmakers ousted Prime Minister Michel Barnier with a no-confidence vote in the government Wednesday, the first time since 1962.

Parliament members on the far right and far left joined together, with 331 members citing no-confidence in the leader, surpassing the minimum requirement to oust him by 43 votes.

Hmm. A Left & Right coalition? THAT would be fascinating.

Thing I wonder about is why was cutting $60 billion from their debt so cringeworthy to them, as nothing came out about that. Makes me wonder if it was just a convenient excuse, although it seems balancing a country's budget isn't popular many places nowadays.

This reports a little more, but still doesn't explain why Marie Le Pen called his budget "toxic" when I thought I remembered correctly the EU's rules said no member should have a debt greater than 3% of its GDP.

We get that here in Oz. The Greens vote down environmental legislation because it does not go far enough, and the Liberals (actually right wingers), vote with them because it goes too far. The Labor (sort of slightly right of centre Democrat) Government fret a bit and do nothing.

The Labor party is not called the Labour Party in Oz, because the bloke they (say) they sent to register the party name wasn't much good at spelling. He was an American with the unusual name of King O'Malley; a con man and Temperance advocate who fled fraud claims from the US to Oz, the Australians got their revenge by naming a pub after him.

Fluid Left/Right coalition is a feature of politics within the European Parliament. Not that they agree necessarily on policy but they object to the domination of obedient centre parties who hold power in Brussels.

When the UK left the EU there were 735 members of parliament representing over forty parties from twenty eight countries. The Centre parties are generally about sixty to seventy per cent of the total and they are the source of the Commissioners who decide EU policy.

I have not followed the French crisis closely but it seems that the Little Napoleon French President is so unpopular the extreme wing parties are just following the pattern of the parliament in Brussels. It is no coincidence that the revolt is led by Madame Le Pen a long time EU parliamentarian.

It is all a recipe for prolonged chaos.

Somebody has to restore order.

They're not going to do it on their own.

Have you met the French? Insufferable. America East...
