I just spent all morning calling every contact and contractor in my book. Nothing. Nada. No work for the forseeable future.

It's times like this when I start thinking I ought to get a real job but whenever I do, I get depressed and end up quitting.

Oh well . . . At least I have plenty of time to hang out here with you guys.

There are no jobs

The employment situation today is without a doubt the most dismal I have ever seen in my lifetime.

Something else we have to thank Herr Bush (Achtung!) for.

Bah! I need a job....

Hope you find some freelance work soon...so I can live vicariously through you....till then it is starting to look like retail for me...*sob sob sob*

The job market for technology in Viriginia is hopping right now, unemployment is low and the new year looks like new spending and new opportunities coming up. Some sectors are suffering now though.

I work in the entertainment industry. Winter is usually a slower season for stagehands and techs. But that's also because I live in Chicago. Not as jumping as New York or L.A.

LA is a great place to live and to work (though traffic can be difficult). There's a lot of excitement going on there, always something new. Would you ever consider moving?

I really liked living there. It is cosmopolitan, there's a tremendous variety, there's the excitement of new concepts and the entertainment industry, and best of all, it doesn't snow!

I've been to L.A. Didn't like it too much. I think I'm just a Chicago guy through and through.

LA sux!

Man, do we have different takes on LA, Roses! I lived there six years, and I hated it. Smoggy, overcrowded, permeated with the phony glitz of the movie industry, marked by stark class divisions-- in downtown LA, the most decadent and opulent luxury exists just a few blocks from incredible squalor, misery, and poverty. LA sucks big time!

About the only good thing about it is the weather.

I actually heard John Kerry say it's the worst economy in the last 50 years. What, is this the line to use against a president named "Bush"?

I liked the glitz. I didn't find the housing condition any worse than any other US city, in fact, it was probably better than most. I lived on the edge of Haarlem for a while and would prefer any of the neighborhoods in LA. The smog is worst against the mountains, but I didn't notice it too much, especially since it's been getting better over the past 20 years (much less smog now than 20 years ago).

With the glitz comes glamour, drama, arts. LA is a city of Arts as well as angels.

If I want to see "real" squalor, I visit Tijuana, Manilla or any of a large city in a poor country. Our poorer areas in the US are like prized locations in many places. Real squalor is living in a cardboard box or under a lean-to made from a single piece of plywood.

In the time since I started this pathetic thread I've gotten called for three days of work, one of them with my union contractor. I'll be able to pay the rent this month.

The life of a freelancer. Always exciting. You never know what's gonna happen next.

You live in Vegas! No phony glitz or opulent luxury there!

You're a world class phony.

    :

Yes, you are correct and that is one of the many reasons I love it here. It is phoney, it is plastic, it is gaudy. And it will, I hope always be my home.

RED.... there is no lack of jobs in Las Vegas. You are misrepresenting our city. They may not be jobs that you and I would like to do, but they are there and if it comes down to it... I will take a job that I don't like until the one I really want, comes along.

Personal invective

Personal invective directed against persons who espouse ideas they don't like: that's what passes for debate by right-wingers such as miles.

I don't like Vegas either, I just live here. Under capitalism, every place sucks, basicly.

Rose, you're looking at the world through rose-colored glasses. The employment situation in Vegas is probably as good as it is anywhere-- and it stinks here. There are far more people seeking work than there are jobs available. Even crappy jobs are hard to get now.

And good jobs-- forget it!

Phony politics, now phony indignation.

What a Bozo.

Okay, look at that statement. It's the ENTERTAINMENT industry where supply always exceeds demand and where the salaries always suck ass. Why are you surprised?

freelancing

Its sucking for me too. I just worked through all my taxes, and am sitting here, scratchin my head... going, HOW exactly did I live on $20,000?????????????? I thought I did better than that!

But... in my attempts to pay taxes quarterly, I gave the govt. $600. Ironically, I am getting back... tentatively, pending 1099s comin back to me... $690. Wooop de do, big happy deal.

I think I'll use it on... oh, whatever.. three car payments, or pay off the computer. Get myself ahead somewhere... or pay the rent with it for a month.

I haven't got too much work going on right now,either... grrrr.

But under a Socialist medical system we could treat his condition with a Labiaectomy.

I never said I was surprised. :) Actually, I've thinking what the hell am I doing in this industry in the first place?! Yeah the work is cool and the hours are okay and it's great to be able to make $250-300 a day.

The major con is sitting around unemployed for weeks at a time. It might be time to go back to engineering work.

I still can't figure it out. Annually, I make less than most of my friends but somehow, unlike them, I manage to stay on top of all my bills. I think being a freelancer automatically makes you better able to manage your budget. You're more thrift concious as opposed to people who always know where their next check is coming from.

Ever seen women and children living in cardboard boxes in downtown L.A.? They are there. Go a few blocks west and there's Aaron Spelling's 30 room mansion, that he doesn't live in.

I am biased, I admit. I don't like LA even though there are a lot of things to see and do here. When you don't have money to do them, it doesn't really matter.

Medjay,

Stuff is gonna pick up circa Feb. here come on out if you can stand it!!!

Anyway I'll be looking for interns come May.
