Every day, I wake up with the freedom to choose what I do, what I eat, where I go, how I dress, what I say. These days, I never take that for granted. I have a very close friend who is doing time in prison, and she's only got about 3 months to go before she gets out. Her life is regimented down to her bowel movements, and yet she is still so full of hope and of she inspires me to treasure each momentary taste of freedom that I have.

Do you take your freedom for granted? What is freedom to you?

Because I haven't had the misfortune of being locked up (yet), Freedom to me is a state of mind.

I've lost it in the past - job from hell, so much pressure and obligation to perform that it reached the point where my job dictated every moment of my life. Sleep and food were of secondary importance, as was enjoyment of life.

I'm never going back to that jail.

Thats one thing about bootcamp...you learn freedom and to appreciate it by going through the deprivation of it. Everything there is regulated, you have very little choice, except during the couple of hours of "holiday routine" granted Sunday mornings.

As one who worked in a real jail, even the most oppressive job in the world does not compare. Yet I must insist that except for the independently wealthy or the totally Bohemian, 90% of life consists of going where you are sent and doing what you are told. That's how you earn the other 10%. Sad, perhaps, but clear-eyed.

I get a pretty clear notion of what it's like to be kept in a cage when I read her letters. It is so sad. It reminds me of how I've always felt when I see animals kept in cages at zoos or elsewhere. They look so sad. I just can't bear to see it. I go visit her sometimes tho, and her eyes are always so full of light. She makes me remember what a precious gift it is to not live in a cage.

Die gedanken sind frei.

A free mind cannot be imprisoned by merely confining a body. I suspect your friend's mind roams the worlds even though her body is encaged.

Freedom is authority over yourself and your own life.

Unfortunately authority come with responsibility which is something many people don't like.

It's the main reason why we as a society and individuals have so much trouble with freedom. We don't want to be responsible for the damage our actions cause.
