I'm really pissed off, and frankly scared, at the direction our western governments are moving. This is particularly true in the year of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the nazi death camps.
I know you people on the other side of the Atlantic have been living with the Patriot Act for some time and that it has been discussed at length here. However, today the new Home Secretary of the UK government announced that he plans to introduce legislation extending the detention without charge or trial from foreign nationals (which is bad enough!) to embrace all those living in these islands.
However, and here's what they think is the clever part, providing an individual agrees to be electronically tagged, to be under 24hours a day surveylance, to have all communication with the outside world monitored, to be subject to a stringent curfew and provided that they have somewhere to stay, they will NOT be held in prison or detention centres. In other words, ANYONE who is deemed to be a threat to "national security" will be liable to imprisonment or what amounts to house arrest.
Sound familiar?
