Under French law it is a criminal offence to insult the president, carrying a fine of up to 45,000 euros (£30,000).

Hmmm. Maybe the U.S. should pass a law like this. After all, we are those nasty people who repress freedom of expression, at least according to the worker's friend.

No prob

No problem at all, RCA. I haven't heard of anyone insulting Al Gore. He's been pretty much forgotten.
:p

America adopts THAT as law and we'd be able to run a surplus for the remainder of the Bush regime! :D

I insult him all the time, but since he wasn't able to steal the election, he's not president.

Well, we have laws against walking your duck on Sundays, and things like that. Unenforceable and antiquated laws still on the books. Is the French Law something that is actually upheld? Or can you walk Chirac on a Sunday?

That quote was about French reaction to a British publication which called Chirac "Saddam's Whore".

The fact that a supposedly liberal government would actually have a law fining you for criticising the Govt is almost unfathomable to me.

The Euros have damn near tossed out any respect I had for their differing viewpoints regarding America and American society.

Well, yeah, but, again, is it a real law, or a 19th century holdover?

I think its still enforced, although I can't answer your question regarding its age, lineage, etc. The fact that a law like that is still on the books amazes me, regardless of when it was passed.
