Free World under attack again???

"Free World" under attack? You make it sound like Sci-Fi.

Snoop is being a bit cryptic and melodramitic, but I wish it was just Sci-Fi:

Two killed in London explosions
Two people died and large numbers of casualties were reported after at least six blasts on the Underground network and a double-decker bus in London.
A police spokeswoman confirmed there had been two deaths at Aldgate and UK home secretary Charles Clarke said the explosions caused "terrible injuries".

The BBC's Frank Gardner said Arab sources said the blasts were probably the work of al-Qaeda.
...

Fucking bastards.

London, and the whole of the UK, was on such a high yesterday. :(

Edited to add: this is very close to home, btw. My hubby goes to London often and only last Thursday spent a lot of time traveling on the tube. He, and the rest of his office, are concerned for a few of their collegues. News is sketchy at the mo.

Scum. Killing is too good for them. I don't care who they are or what their cause is, detonating bombs on a bus is deserveing of a special place in hell.

Condolences to all in the UK today. :rose:

I know. This is far too serious and too real for "Free World under attack"-type slogans.

Yep. I wouldn't lable anyone caught up in this as part of the "Free World" right now. Just ordinary people living ordinary lives. No fucking martyrs here.

I saw the story when I came on line.... My heartfelt condolences to all.... :rose:

A bomb is a cowards way and on a crowded transport, makes it even more cowardly... A message that they don't care who they kill.... terrible..

I can't help but think it can be a reaction to the Olympic desicion, the games being an obvious target for anyone opposing intercultural understanding and tolerance. But then again, a bit too short notice for that.

Either which way and whatever caused it, this sucks.

:rose: to the victims and their loved ones.

Yesterday I finished reading JG Ballard's "Millennium People", which was focused on a series of apparently meaningless, random terrorist attacks - on Heathrow airport, on the NFT, on the Tate Modern, etc. - with the randomness and meaninglessness being the key factors. A motiveless act stops the universe in its tracks.

It's strange to see reality catching up with fiction so rapidly.

I doubt it. It's too well coordinated, too soon after the decision. Very few people really believed London would win the bid.

(This is exactly what that book was about. The world needs motives, reasons, otherwise it goes insane. I'm watching SkyNews, and they're saying that the absence of warning is a proof that Al Qaeda is behind this. It all sounds so desperate.)

Tony Blair is linking it to the G8 summit meeting, but I guess ecurityis too tight in Scotland and disrupting London has more effect on the world's stock markets and generates more news coverage.

I think the the contrast to the Olympic's euphoria just "bonus points" for this attack.

Does anyone else find themselves wary of being excited over anything these days? I feel like I'm constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. Big announcements about Olympic venue decisions, huge national sporting events, even big movie releases that generate excitement all tend to make me a little nervous these days because they seem to have become targets for terror. Or, they seem to be quickly overshadowed by tragedy. Celebration is on the way to becoming an underground activity with no schedule or venue being announced until the last possible moment and by invitation only. Very surreal. Very sad.

SubJoe, if you happen to be lurking, please check in. :rose:

OK, well, yes and all... but if anyone should happen to come across this mythic "free world" in their travels, please let me know where it is so's I can relocate.

Meanwhile let's all go back to watching reality tv... nothing to see here, move along.

(I'd just like to see one banner headline in the western newspapers even hinting at how many civilians are dead or crippled as a result of our world police efforts.)

We're trying to do good. We may be failing, we may be ending up causing more trouble than if we'd tried, but at least we are trying.

These were mas-murdering fuckers who had no aim apart from to kill as many innocent people as they could lay their hands on. To even think to compare them, or to brush them off is...

I don't even have the words. Fuck you for trying to make a political point when 50 innocent people have been murdered just for going about their business.

Well said, Earl, sweetheart.

Words can't begin to express the depth of my feeling right now, and the myriad of emotions I keep going through (I keep crying and I don't know why, but I suppose I do really. I say we won't let it get to us, but how can it not?), but I've just got to tell you how wonderful it is to see you. I know this might sound "cliquey" or whatever, but I do not give a fuck. There are certain people on this board I feel incredibly close to and those people never fail to touch me. You are one of them.

Thank you, for your eloquence, and for just being here.

Katie
