What kind is it (pentium, 486, etc.)? How old? What are the eror messages?

I already have four computers, two of which are not setup right now because they are too old to bother with (but I think I will put Linux on the P133 so I can play with it).

*lol*

It's a Hewlett Packard 9680C
Intell Pentium 3.
Bought on 2-26-00.

It's working just fine, until you go to shut down.

Hit start, shut down, Shutdown goes into a restart.. restart goes into a Fatal Exception.

I called Tech support... only option is to reformat hard drive. I've done that once before and it's not fun.:(

I'm in the process of backing up all the crap that i want to keep. (pictures and a few other things)

after reformatting, i have to slowely reinstall all my stuff, after each install i have to see if the problem returns. If it doesn't.. then it's fine, if it does, then i have to find out why that program is causing problems.

Hopefully it's a software problem and not a hardware problem.

I will take it if you decide you truly do not want it, but I bet it is not a software problem. You might want to go into the BIOS and disable any kind of "soft" power down options.

I have a similar problem with my computer when I select shut down from Win2K and I believe it is the "soft" shut down option which is kind of flaky with Windoze on many computers. The soft shut down is when the computer gets a signal from the OS to shut off without the user having to use the power button. Kind of like Macs do when they shut down.

I just live with it since it doesn't affect any other functioning of the computer. I just press the power button before it restarts.

I'm using Windows 98 SE and it wasn't doing it before, but decided to do it now. I've gone thru the troubleshooting and can't find a problem

Norton systemworks says there is no problem.

I'm about to go back to my trusty little ole webtv.. i didn't have any problems with it. I just hated it because it sucked.. :D

I doubt that hubby would let me give away the computer. I've spent lots of money on it. Ok, haven't SPENT.. but i've charged alot.. ;)

I'll ignore it for awhile, do the reformat when i can.

Oh.. another question

I'm trying to back up all my stuff, i want to do it to CD.. do i need CD-RW or can i just us CD-R's? For some reason when i click to "send to" M drive it says i don't have access and some other (can't remember right now) error shows up with it.

any ideas? anyone?

grr dont talk about computers breaking i just spent all my afternoon fixing my laptop cos it decided not to boot into windows except for when in safe mode.. lol ..

For backing up onto CD's

You can use CD-R or CD-RW for backing up a computer it doesnt matter which but if you use CD-R you wont be able to re-use them.. but they are cheaper than CD-RW's and its a good idea to keep data on cd's anyway.. so it doesnt matter which you use :)

Mmmm the love/hate relationship with computers.
I think we should start a support group.
Help I think my computer hates me! lol
I hope you don't have to reformat freakygirl32. I hate that too. :( Seems to take forever!
Still having a few teething difficulties here but not as bad as they were since you suggested rambooster in the interim to getting some more memory.
Did you get my last email?
I think my email address is possessed, keeps timing out and doing weird stuff. Anyone who is emailing me and thinks, bitch email me back I probably have :(
anyway where was I? :)

You can use CD-Rs and I recommend CD-Rs for a single large backup because any CD drive can read them. Many CD drives cannot read CD-RW discs unless they are a CD-RW drive. I use CD-RW for large incremental/periodic backups sometimes, but mostly I use CDRs as they are cheap and can be read anywhere anytime.

duh.. jeez i'm an airhead

Easy CD Creator has a thing to do a cd back up.. i'm working on it now

Ok.. question for the comp geeks of the board

If i do a complete back up of my hard drive.. reformat my computer.. go back in and download everything off my back up disc will my problem come back?

The tech person told me more than likely i have a corrupted windows file. And the best thing to do is reformat. But i'm wondering if that is the problem and i do a complete system back up, will it reload the corrupt file over the good files that i just installed with the reboot?

is this as confusing to anyone else as it is me?
