Free Speech in its Appropriate Place

This is a community of sorts. A community with a very high value on free speech.

Thank goodness.

However in any community places and times for certain kinds of speech develop and often a speaker that is inappropriate for the time and place is asked to take it elsewhere. Sometimes forcibly removed.

For instance....an idiot spewing offensive bile at a memorial service in RL would be removed from the premises. He can be free to spew elsewhere...say the pub downtown.

It seems to me that in an on-line community such as this should have some mechanism for this.

If we don't want to hinder some morons right to disturb the peace give him a place to do it that is appropriate and remove his posts to that place. I would rarely advocate this but when the breach of decorum is so great as to disrespect the loss of life and the morners of a loved one, this is such a time.

After all, threads that are posted in the wrong forum are moved to a more appropriate place. I think this should be considered for our lovely little trolls. Let them have their say....but put them in the corner to do it when their misbehavior comes in such an inappropriate place.

BTW, speaking of blasphamy, I couldn't believe that f*** Rumsfield was talking about war at the Pentagon on the 11th. It's a memorial, for God's sake! Can't the dead have a friggin' moment of peace?

Hear, Hear. Rumsfield should have been escorted away.

I do not use my ignore button. I know how to selectively read should I desire.

My point is that the troll remarks made in Rambrats thread are grossly inappropriate for that thread. It goes beyond hijacking or any other tolerated and ignorable behavior.

Let him have his say....but remove it to another thread in this instance. Out of a decency that would be demanded in any society.

There is. It's called the Ignore button. It's called not responding to those you find offensive. No one here seems to get this. They argue with Hanns, play his game, build up his threads til they're pages long, then get upset when he jumps in and messes up other threads. You all encourage him to be here every time you respond to him. You want him to stop? Put him on Ignore. Don't quote his posts. Don't respond to him or any of his many personalities. Until you do that, it's hard for anyone to feel bad for you when you give him so much attention.

Gee, 9/11 and war....so?
But personal insults and vile remarks made directly to morners?
Let's see him do that and see how long he'd last.

I'm just sayin'.

I found Rumsfeld's remarks to be "offensive bile," in that case, and totally innappropriate. Others said that his remarks were appropriate.

Who decides? You?

In the case that you are referring specifically too, the moderators have apparently already made their decision. In this private forum it is their decision to make--alone. So freedom of speech is sort of irrelevant in this case, anyway.

Make your petition to a moderator.

Well said, well put. I agree totally. But it would have carried more weight if you registered before posting.

I understand what you are all are saying.

I generally only respond to trolls when I'm playing.

However I see a line crossed.

And I'm allowed to express that.;)

I have Hanns on ignore. I didn't see a single one of his posts in the memorial thread until people starting quoting him. If you do not choose to use the ignore feature, then please actively ignore him if he bothers you so much. Why do you think he kept posting to that thread? Because people were responding to him, even if just to tell him to go away.

Try an experiment. Put him on ignore, and then go back and re-read the memorial thread. It conveys its original intent, until people starting to respond to him. None of his ugly words carry any weight in a vacuum; they only start to hurt when people respond.

Some people don't have the same feelings about death as you do

Some people have seen death, some people have killed, some people have shot others at point blank.

Some accept it as part of life, some are more realistic

I'm consulting The Journalist about an article today

Stay tuned

Uh huh...

When you start choosing an "appropriete place" for that right, start choosing approrpiete places for all your other rights too.

Asking for your rights to be restricted is the best way to flat out lose them.

I can walk outside my door and out onto the parking lot and say absolutely anything I want to say - short of a threat to kill the president. If anyone heard me, they could do nothing legally about it.

Prove it:

Animal rights protests
9/11 protests
Anti-Bush protests
Pro-Life protests within a specified range from an abortion clinic
Burning the flag
Creating a piece of art that has a nude, S&M, female Jesus hanging from a cross made of southern corporations logo

Prove to me that it's not a reality.

Those are protests.. Thats the right to protest...
Most countries allow it..

And why can't you threaten the President?

You've never attended a funeral that Fred Phelps decided to show up at, have you?

I have Hanns on ignore. I didn't read the posts that quoted him. Howver vile and annoying he wa, he does have the right to speak. If it bothers you, exercise your right to pretend he doesn't exist.
