Some lawyers negotiated a 44 million dollar settlement with some music companies. If you bought a CD between 1995 and 2000 you qualify part of the settlement.

http://musiccdsettlement.com/english/default.htm

They estimate it'll be between 5 and 20 dollars. You have to register by Tuesday, though.

The saddest part is that I don't think I did buy a single CD during that timeframe.

The joys of promos, ya know. :D

I will print it out for hubby to post in the store, though.

The amount you will be paid will be based on the total number of claims filed, up to a maximum of $20 per claimant. Please note, however, that if the number of claims filed result in awards of less than $5, the Settlement Fund will revert to Cy Pres distribution. Cy Pres distribution means all Settlement Funds would be distributed to not-for-profit corporations and/or charitable organizations and/or governmental or public entities within your state, to be used for music-related purposes or programs. For more information on this, please see the Notice of Proposed Settlement.

It's rule #1 for xclaimants to read. It's an easy out clause.

Thank you. I had completely forgotten about it. Now I'm crossing my fingers for $20. Of course, with all the money I've saved via Napster, et al....

So far 2.8 million people have signed up, according to the paper today.

Why is that a scam?

It's an easy out clause: anyone applying for money will likely never see a dime. It has it right in the clause, they don't have to pay a single person a dime, if they get to many claimants.

But that doesn't make it a scam. It's not like we have to pay any money. It is, however, a big money-making deal for the lawyers, who WILL get paid, no matter what.

Ahh yes another stupid lawsuit!! Why don't you go to McDonalds and spill coffee on yourself.

You are, however, being asked for a partial soc#, as well as a full name. That info can give anyone with the knowledge a full soc#. I'm just not in the habit of handing that info out to things that sound like scams.

Hey, if any of you all get a check for a whopping $5 in the next year or so, then I was wrong.

If not... well, 2.8 million people at the full 20 already goes over the budget of 44million, coming out 56million, so my guess is, you guys won't be seeing more than 10, at the most, if anything is ever paid out.

It's legit. It's been on the news.

Which, of course, means more exposure, which means less signees, which means more chances that we'll all get squat.

But is $5 worth two minutes of your time? That's $150 an hour.

No, it's still $5 an hour, because if it were more, then they would give you more. You can't equate it out to more, because they aren't giving you any more. Now, if they could possibly give you $150 an hour, then it would be worth $150 an hour.
