Yep, it's that time of year once again.

Chris is sputtering around out in the Caribean and all eyes in Southern Florida are focused on it.

Anyone out there know of a good or even passable free program for tracking storms?

I don't know of any programs, but LinuxGeek maintains a tropical storm watch thread on the genral board with links to several very good sites with up to the minute information.

PS for your favorites list so you don't actualy have to brave the GB o find it:

When I was in the Carolina's I had free computer weather from First Alert weather, witn television, I think, an active doppler radar and a storm tracking system for severe weather both tornadic and cyclonic info, I found it most informative last year when all the storms hit...good luck...

Hey Ami,

How goes it?

Down here right now I have the Weather Channel which is pretty good. I also have the NOAA Sites so I can always go there.

Unfortunately I couldn't get real time numbers during the storms when they passed through our area.

Maybe I'll have to break down and just buy me some equipment and anchor it in the back yard so I can get the information I want.

Haven't used this since I usually just hit the NHC & sister NOAA sites, so I don't know how well it works or how functional it is. It is Java so should run under any modern operating system.

I'll have to check it out, thanks.

Took a look at your thread and will have to go back. Some good info there.

When a storm is threating the US mainland this site will go active with live data being fed to the NHC: http://www.voipwx.net/ In past years, they made a stream available so non amateur radio operators could listen to the traffic.

This site also will have some decent activity and some real time data when the US mainland in threatened: http://www.hwn.org/

This site has real time data from around Florida all the time: http://www.wxqa.com/states/FL.html If you take off the FL.html from the URL, the directory will list pages for all 50 states and a few other counties participating in the Citizen Weather Observer Program.
