Roy Rogers (and Trigger)

Oh dear. a song from my childhood.

A four-legged friend
A four-legged friend
He'll never let you down
He's honest and stable right up to the end
that wonderful one, two three four-legged friend

Who or what
is it?

It's a contest held every year to see who can hurl a pumpkin for distance, or accuracy, or both.

They have catapults, air cannons, centrifugal machines of various sorts, in several "weight" categories...it's quite the show.

It started out as a fun joke contest during a harvest festival, but then mushroomed into its own elaborate festival.

Check out the website and/or google the name for some pics of the rigs that are entered. Some of the compression cannons are big enough to require a flatbed truck, like a self-propelled howitzer.

Thank you.
In Scotland they have a simpler contest; "Tossing the Caber".
Think of a Telegraph Pole and you won't be far out.

I attend the Highland Games over here every chance I get. :)
I delight in explaining to the uninitiated that contestants are not judged on how far they can toss it, but how straight.

However, my favorite event is the Farmer's Walk.
