Once, in the vestibule of our city's public library, I was putting my galoshes back on as I was leaving. As I stretched the black rubber over my well-shined black leather shoes, I realized a woman nearby was gazing at me with rapt attention. I looked at her and she blushed, then apologized: "I'm sorry, but I really enjoy watching men put those things on."

The shoe programs have closed along with the shoe business. The town renamed itself "Bata" in hopes the family would return with their business. The last bit of research I know of from there was a practical study of Otzi's Neolithic rope sandals.

Aww, too bad. Although I don't know if I would've liked the rope sandals ... LOL, I tried on a pair of leopard skin buckled sandals the other day, but even the shop assistant was obliged to admit they wouldn't be practical for the school run.
