This is a Valentine's Day thread. It's for love song lyrics, love poems, photos, paintings--whatever way you want to express your love to you sweetheart, dear friend, etc.

We've only got a few days left, so make it sweet and pretty, hot and sexy, whatever expresses it best for you.

Why should I play Cupid? Well, most of you know I met a poet right here on the pobo a few years ago, fell hopelessly in love with him and now sit a few feet away from his still-sleeping form.

So I have rights. :)

Also I'm inclined to be a little on the sentimental side.

Happy Valentine's Day, Poets.

Listen to Ella Fitzgerald Sing this One! Gorgeous!

I'm Old Fashioned
Jerome Kern

I am not such a clever one
About the latest fads
I admit I was never one
Adored by local lads

Not that I ever try to be a saint
I'm the type that they classify as quaint

I'm old fashioned
I love the moonlight
I love the old fashioned things

The sound of rain
Upon a window pane
The starry song that April sings

This year's fancies
Are passing fancies
But sighing sighs holding hands
These my heart understands

I know I'm old fashioned
But I don't mind it
That's how I want to be
As long as you agree
To stay old fashioned with me

These Foolish Things (Bryan Ferry Version)-(marvell,strachey,link)

Oh will you never let me be?
Oh will you never set me free?
The ties that bound us are still around us
There´s no escape that I can see
And still those little things remain
That bring me happiness or pain

A cigarette that bears a lipstick’s traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things
Remind me of you

A tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumbling words that told you what my heart meant
A fairground’s painted swings
These foolish things
Remind me of you

You came, you saw, you conquered me
When you did that to me, I somehow knew that this had to be

The winds of march that make my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings - but who´s to answer?
Oh, how the ghost of you clings
These foolish things
Remind me of you

Gardenia perfume ling´ring on a pillow
Wild strawb´ries only seven francs a kilo
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things
Remind me of you

The park at evening when the bell has sounded
The isle de france with all the girls around it
The beauty that is spring
These foolish things
Remind me of you

I know that this was bound to be
These things have haunted me
For you´ve entirely enchanted me

The sigh of midnight trains in empty stations
Silk stockings thrown aside, dance invitations
Oh, how the ghost of you clings
These foolish things
Remind me of you

First daffodils and long excited cables
And candlelight on little corner tables
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things
Remind me of you

The smile of garbo and the scent of roses
The waiters whistling as the last bar closes
The song that crosby sings
These foolish things
Remind me of you

How strange, how sweet to find you still
These things are dear to me
That seem to bring you so near to me

The scent of smould´ring leaves, the wail of steamers
Two lovers on the street who walk like dreamers
Oh, how the ghost of you clings
These foolish things
Remind me of you, just you

Okay, it's not really sentimental, but I'm a freak--and I like to do freaky things with my face. :D

I'd like to do some freaky things with your face....

Sentimental Fool
(Ferry/Mackay)

Surely you cannot be leading me on?
Well if that's so, however can I love again?
How could I believe again?
How can I hold on?

Sentimental fool
Knowing that fate is cruel,
You ought to forget it.

Yes, I know it's true,
I've seen what love can do,
But I don't regret it.

Oh, you silly thing--
Don't you see what's happening?
You're better without it.

No, that's not the case--
If you were in my place,
You never would doubt it.

Sentimental fool
Who broke the golden rule,
You couldn't resist it.

Though it's all in vain,
I'd do it all again
Just to relive a minute.

A woman in love
Can make you feel good--
You know what you're living for.
She'll give you so much
And keep you in touch
With all that's worth living for.
Oh once she gets in
Through thick and through thin
She'll show you what living's for.

The rhythm of love
It must go on
Can't stop.
The beat of your heart
Is like a drum
Will it stop?

Getting back to the romance.....

THE LADY IN RED (Chris Deburgh)

I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight
I've never seen you shine so bright
I've never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance
They're looking for a little romance
Given half a chance
And I've never seen that dress you're wearing
Or that highlights in your hair
That catch your eyes
I have been blind

CHORUS
The lady in red is dancing with me
Cheek to cheek
There's nobody here
It's just you and me
It's where I wanna be
But I hardly know this beauty by my side
I'll never forget the way you look tonight

I've never seen you looking so gorgeous as you did tonight
I've never seen you shine so bright you were amazing
I've never seen so many people want to be there by your side
And when you turned to me and smiled it took my breath away
And I have never had such a feeling such a feeling
Of complete and utter love, as I do tonight

CHORUS

I never will forget the way you look tonight
The lady in red
My lady in red

La mer
Qu'on voit danser le long des golfes clairs
A des reflets d'argent
La mer
Des reflets changeants
Sous la pluie

La mer
Au ciel d'ete confond
Ses blancs moutons
Avec les anges si purs
La mer bergere d'azur
Infinie

Voyez
Pres des etangs
Ces grands roseaux mouilles
Voyez
Ces oiseaux blancs
Et ces maisons rouillees

La mer
Les a berces
Le long des golfes clairs
Et d'une chanson d'amour
La mer
A berce mon coeur pour la vie

The Wind Cries Mary

After all the jacks are in their boxes
and the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
footsteps dressed in red
And the wind whispers Mary

A broom is drearily sweeping
up the broken pieces of yesterdays life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind, it cries Mary

The traffic lights, they turn, uh, blue tomorrow
and shine their emptiness down on my bed
The tiny island sags down stream
'cause the life that lived is, is dead
And the wind screams Mary

Will the wind ever remember
the names it has blow in the past?
And with this crutch, its old age, and its wisdom
it whispers no, this will be the last
And the wind cries Mary

Bell Bottom Blues - Eric Clapton

Bell bottom blues, you made me cry.
I don’t want to lose this feeling.
And if I could choose a place to die
It would be in your arms.

Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?
I’d gladly do it because
I don’t want to fade away.
Give me one more day, please.
I don’t want to fade away.
In your heart I want to stay.

It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.
The way that you treat me baby.
Once I was strong but I lost the fight.
You won’t find a better loser.

Chorus

Chorus

Bell bottom blues, don’t say goodbye.
I’m sure we’re gonna meet again,
And if we do, don’t you be surprised
If you find me with another lover.

Chorus

I don’t want to fade away.
Give me one more day please.
I don’t want to fade away.
In your heart I long to stay.

I met my old lover on the street last night
She seemed so glad to see me, I just smiled
And we talked about some old times and we drank ourselves some beer
Still crazy after all these years, still crazy after all these years

I'm not the kind of man who tends to socialize
I seem to lean on old familiar ways
And I ain't no fool for love songs that whisper in my ears
Still crazy after all these years, still crazy after all these years

Four in the morning, I'm tapped up and yawning, lorning my life away
I never worry, why should I, oh yeah, it's all gonna fade

(Instrumental break)

Now I sit by my window and I watch the cars roll by
I fear I'll do some damage one fine day
But I would not be convicted by a jury of my peers
Still crazy after all these years
Still crazy, still crazy, still crazy after all these years

Paul Simon

has written some spectacularly beautiful love songs:

Hearts and Bones

One and one-half wandering Jews
Free to wander wherever they choose
Are travelling together
In the Sangre de Cristo
The Blood of Christ mountains
Of New Mexico
On the last leg of the journey
They started a long time ago

The arc of a love affair
Rainbows in the high desert air
Mountain passes slipping into stones

Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones

Thinking back to the season before
Looking back through the cracks in the door
Two people were married
The act was outrageous
The bride was contagious
She burned like a bride
These events may have had some effect
On the man with the girl by his side

The arc of a love affair
His hands rolling down her hair
Love like lightning shaking till it moans

Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones

And whoa whoa whoa
She said why?
Why don’t we drive through the night
And we’ll wake up down in Mexico
Oh I
I don’t know nothin’ about nothin’
About no Mexico

And tell me why?
Why won’t you love me
For who I am
Where I am
He said:
’cause that’s not the way the world is baby
This is how I love you, baby
This is how I love you, baby

One and one-half wandering Jews
Returned to their natural coasts
To resume old acquaintances
Step out occasionally
And speculate who had been damaged the most
Only time will determine if these consolations
Will be their reward

The arc of a love affair
Waiting to be restored
You take two bodies and you twirl them into one
Their hearts and their bones
And they won’t come undone

Hearts and bones

At the soda shop

When I see my

The way you boogie all night

Cheap Thrills

Darling, darling, please hear my plea
God only knows what your loving does to me...

Cheap thrills in the back of my car
Cheap thrills, how fine they are
Cheap thrills up and down my spine
I need it, I need it, ’cause it feels so fine now

Cheap thrills all over the seat
Cheap thrills, your kind of lovin’ can’t be beat
Cheap thrills up and down my spine
I need it, I need it, ’cause it feels so fine now

Cheap thrills
Cheap thrills
Cheap thrills
Cheap thrills

Cheap thrills, I can’t wait another day
Cheap thrills, you gotta try to sneak away
Cheap thrills up and down my spine
I need it, I need it, ’cause it feels so fine

Cheap thrills
Cheap thrills
Cheap thrills
Cheap thrills

Cheap thrills set fire to my soul
Cheap thrills, like a story untold about
Cheap thrills up and down my spine
I need it, I need it, ’cause it feels so fine
Cheap thrills
Cheap thrills
Cheap thrills
Cheap thrills

Cheap thrills in the back of my car
Cheap thrills, how fine they are
Cheap thrills up and down my spine
I need it, I need it, ’cause it feels so fine

Don Henley...
The Last Worthless Evening

I know you broke up with him
And your heart’s still on the shelf
It’s been over two years for me
And I’m still not quite myself
You can’t be with someone new
And you can’t go back to him
You’re beginning to realize
That it’s sink or swim
I see you around sometimes
And my heart just melts
You’re lookin’ like if you had your wish
You’d be somewhere else
And it just breaks my heart
To see you here this way
Someday I’ll get the nerve
To walk up to you and say
This is the last worthless evening
That you’ll have to spend
Just gimme a chance
To show you how to love again
This is the last worthless evening
That you’ll have to spend
’cause I’ll be there
When your broken heart is on the mend
Every night it’s the same old crowd
In smoky rooms
You catch a faint glimpse of love sometimes
But it never blooms
I’ve been around this block a time or two
And I’ve made some big mistakes
But girl I promise you, I promise you
That this is the worthless evening
That you’ll have to spend
Just gimme a chance
To show you how to love again
This is the last worthless evening
That you’ll have to spend
’cause it won’t be long
’till your little heart is on the mend
People inside their houses
With the shades pulled down
God knows, we could use some romance
In this sleepy bedroom town
I know you’re still afraid to rush into anything
But there’re just so many summers
And just so many springs
And this is the last worthless evening
That you’ll have to spend
Just gimme a chance to show you how
To love again
This is the last worthless evening
That you’ll have to spend, baby
’cause I’ll be there when your broken heart
Is on the mend
This is the last worthless evening
That you’ll have to spend
Just gimme a chance, gimme a chance
To show you how to love again
This is the last worthless evening
That you’ll have to spend ’cause it won’t be long
’til your little heart is on the mend

Robbie Robertson sung by Rod Stewart
Broken Arrow

and for the Frankly Crowd,

How glad the many millions of annabelles and lillians
Would be to capture me
But you had such persistence, you wore down my resistance
I fell and it was swell

I’m your big and brave and handsome romeo
How I won you I shall never never know
It’s not that you’re attractive
But, oh, my heart grew active
When you came into view

I’ve got a crush on you, sweetie pie
All the day and night-time give me sigh
I never had the least notion that
I could fall with so much emotion

Could you coo, could you care
For a cunning cottage we could share
The world will pardon my mush
’cause I have got a crush on you

Could you coo, could you care
For a cunning cottage
That we could share
The world will pardon my mush
’cause I have got a crush, my baby, on you

I know... My take on love is a bit skewered! Thats why I've always been single- cuz I've always been smarter than horny!

tho it was usually neck and neck! does that make it necking?

Geez, Ange. That AV is almost about to burst from sentimentality. If that goopy red thing surrounding the figures starts to pulse, I am duckin' and coverin'.

But (he says, sincerely) I feel the same 'bout mine own. So I think I'll crank up the Yeatsometer to its loopiest and offer this'un, one of my mooney faves:
He Wishes For the Cloths of Heaven
William Butler Yeats

Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Yeats Redux

This one is also among my sentimental favorites. The last verse/strophe/stanza is one of my favorites.
The Song of Wandering Aengus
William Butler Yeats

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;

And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And some one called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.
Happy Valentine's Day, y'all. I have to go kiss someone.

Piece of My Heart

Piece of My Heart

Oh, come on, come on, come on, come on!

Didn’t I make you feel like you were the only man —yeah!
Didn’t I give you nearly everything that a woman possibly can ?
Honey, you know I did!
And each time I tell myself that I, well I think I’ve had enough,
But I’m gonna show you, baby, that a woman can be tough.

I want you to come on, come on, come on, come on and take it,
Take it!
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby!
Oh, oh, break it!
Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, oh, have a!
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby,
You know you got it if it makes you feel good,
Oh, yes indeed.

You’re out on the streets looking good,
And baby deep down in your heart I guess you know that it ain’t right,
Never, never, never, never, never, never hear me when I cry at night,
Babe, I cry all the time!
And each time I tell myself that I, well I can’t stand the pain,
But when you hold me in your arms, I’ll sing it once again.

I’ll say come on, come on, come on, come on and take it!
Take it!
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby.
Oh, oh, break it!
Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah,
Oh, oh, have a!
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby,
You know you got it, child, if it makes you feel good.

I need you to come on, come on, come on, come on and take it,
Take it!
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby!
oh, oh, break it!
Break another little bit of my heart, now darling, yeah, c’mon now.
oh, oh, have a
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby.
You know you got it —whoahhhhh!!

Take it!
Take it! Take another little piece of my heart now, baby,
Oh, oh, break it!
Break another little bit of my heart, now darling, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Oh, oh, have a
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby, hey,
You know you got it, child, if it makes you feel good.

If it's any consolation, he rolled his eyes a little (before he smiled kindly) when he saw it.

I do try not to be too overweening in my sentimentality, but I also adore Charles Dickens, so I may be a lost cause. :D

A silent look of affection and regard when all other eyes are turned coldly away--the consciousness that we possess the sympathy and affection of one being when all others have deserted us--is a hold, a stay, a comfort, in the deepest affliction, which no wealth could purchase, nor power bestow.
~ The Pickwick Papers

So, she leaning on her husband's arm, they turned homeward by a rosy path which the gracious sun struck out for them in its setting. And O there are days in this life, worth life and worth death. And O what a bright old song it is, that O 'tis love, 'tis love, 'tis love that makes the world go round!
~ Our Mutual Friend

To conceal anything from those to whom I am attached, is not in my nature. I can never close my lips where I have opened my heart.
~ Master Humphrey's Clock

I loved you madly; in the distasteful work of the day, in the wakeful misery of the night, girded by sordid realities, or wandering through Paradises and Hells of visions into which I rushed, carrying your image in my arms, I loved you madly
~ The Mystery of Edwin Drood
