Do you have a Fortress of Solitude ?

Where is it ? What is it ?

One room ? Or the whole house ? Is it even a physical place ? Or a mental state of being ?

I have two in a way.

Our whole house is devoted to our collectibles. Statues, busts, books, art, odds and ends we love and like to look at. No way could we fit it all in one room, unless it was a REALLY REALLY big room.

My other Fortress is books. I read fast and I read a lot. And I am lucky I have a great imagination and when I read ... I am there in the book. I can see what is going on like it is real for the time those pages are open.

Mine is entirely in my mind. I will just be completely shut off from the world, even though my body is doing everyday stuff my mind is in another place, and completely isolated from the world in which my body exists.

Books.

Hundreds of them.

No wait, probably near a thousand now.

I gotta get a bigger place.

Yeah ... me too. I finally had to bite the bullet and donate some of my books to the local library. I was running out of places to keep them. They put what they can use out on the shelves, and the others, they sell at the annual book sale to raise money to buy books for the next year. Everyone wins. My loved books get new homes, and I have more room to go buy new ones.

:D

Mine is my desk. I can run the headphones over, listen to music while I write, play games, or surf the net. To really get away from things I'll work on some scale models.

My other is that bathroom, with a good book of course. Heh heh.

i have several: my recording studio, my room with all my tons of books on varying subjects, my back yard with all the trees i get to chop with my chainsaw......i guess the point is that i take a piece of the fortress with me wherever i go

I have a few.

My bed is my palace. Just looking at it soothes me.

I'm able to go anywhere in my mind at almost any time, dreaming or awake.

The most productive and fulfilling solitude for me is when I'm driving...away...to nowhere. Not sitting in traffic, commuting or going from place to place, rather....just going.

Similar to Draaah's driving, but in a sailboat. It is the going, not the getting there that frees the mind.

I guess I don't have any place that is my own - totally sacred and mine - other than my mind.

However - when I'm home - in good weather... my favorite spot is on the deck, looking at the woods (often with cigar and laptop - sometimes with a scotch as well).

When I travel, my hotel room is my fortress of solitude.

Now if I could just fly and have super strength and x-ray vision!

Books are my first escape. I can lose myself in a book and forget my troubles for hours on end, if need be.

Now that I'm on my own again, my entire apartment is my Fortress, but I've found that I've been spending more time in my bedroom and that I've purposely put things in there that I find comforting - pictures, candles, special momentos.

i guess i'd have to say my wood shop. very few people ever drop in and i can get lost in a project for hours at a time. if i really need to "escape" i'll throw a chunk of wood on the lathe. the spinning and watching and feeling the wood turn into something that it wasn't a while ago is the closest thing to self-hypnosis that i know of.

My fortress is usually in the garage where I can get lost in whatever project of the moment. Either refinishing old furniture or restoring an old automobile. I forget all of my problems.:)

I also have Lit as a Fortress of Solitude. Here I can mosey around and check out whatever I want to. Only one person knows I come here. It's not a secret ... it's just not something I share with everyone I know.
