Formulas

Ok so what's your formula?

1. You need a disturbance to upset the status quo
2. You need two self-inflicted events the protagonist cant fix
3. You need a crisis that results from the self-inflicted events and helps the antagonist
4. The protagonist needs a Tom Terrific brainstorm borne of desperation
5. You need a resolution

Every word of dialogue, description, narrative, etc. needs to push the story forward. Absolutely no pauses to smell the roses or navel gaze. Keep them dogies movin, rawhide!

Dont assume that 'disturbance' or 'self-inflicted' or 'crisis' or 'desperation' are bad. They are the stressors that push the story along. And there must be method to the madness, that is, there must be logical connections between events....just dont make it obvious.
