Forms of address

At this very early stage in my involvement in this community, as I am 'learning the ropes,' so to speak, I have an on-line 'surrogate' sub. She alternately addresses me as Sir, Master, or, when she's feeling especially affectionate, 'baby.' I have no problem with any of these means of address. I'd be interested in knowing how Dom/mes and their subs arrived at their particular forms of address. How do you address one another?

Thank you.

In My case, I choose the form of the address. I do not let submissives who I do not have a relationship call me Mistress. Only those who I have control over may do that.

New subs call Me Ma'am or my Lady.

And those who I just meet may call me by name until we have established that we will be discussing an ongoing D/s relationship.

I just do not like just anyone calling Me Mistress. I believe it has no meaning when spoken by a stranger.

Thank you, Ebony. I think I'm on the right track, then, with my sub. What do you call your sub (i. e., how do you address him/her?)

I give them names, over time. I have one called sissy, one called punk, one called bitch boy.

I use their names too. If we are in public I always use their names and they use mine. They call me by my given name in public and the way they say it the Mistress is implied.

He told me what to call Him. In private, its Sir or Master.

In public, its His given name.

On the boards, its generally Master or Snooze.

Unless I'm beating him at the time of the exchange, my name does just dandy and great.

I just like to go with the traditional "Master." In public generally "Sir" unless it's a very touchy situation.

I use a varity of names for subs. Most commonly I refer to her as "child." As in: "Come now child, I know it does not hurt that much."

the joys of dating a literate dom - lots of cute nicknames. i'm called nymphet, which is the term in the book "lolita" for young sexual girls. i like personal pet-names like that, ones given to me because of who i am that say something about the person adressing me.

A nymph is a creature from Greek Mythology. If memory serves they were water spirits.

I agree with Eb. I do not like strangers to call me Master but if a sub feels the need to give me a title I tell them to call me Sir. However, I don't expect a sub to call me anything just because I'm a Dom.

i call my Master Daddy or Dad, almost exclusively. occasionally i may call him Sir and i think once or twice i may have called him Master. but he is my Father in all ways except blood, so Daddy is the most appropriate way to refer to him. it's not a pet name or term of endearment, it's just who/what he is. just as most people would never dream of calling their parents by their first name, i can't imagine ever calling Daddy by name. this will sound unbelievable, but i have never called him anything but Daddy....even before he was my Master, before we had any kind of romantic relationship. of course he was not "Daddy" back then, but i had just never referred to him by his name or any name. think about it, when you are speaking with a person, how often do you utter their name? when you call up your best friend joe, do you say, "hey joe, so what's up joe? how's life joe?"....chances are you, just say "hey, what's up"...that's the way it was with us...there was never any reason for me to say or type his name when we were communicating, and then over time he simply became Daddy. neither of us planned it that way...i don't go for the whole DaddyDom/age play/role play thing. it was just the feelings we had for each other...our natural interaction...everything...it was purely Father and daughter...so, one day, without even thinking about it, while in conversation, i called him Daddy...it just slipped out. afterwards i realized what i had said and asked him if that was okay...He said it was more than okay, as he had felt like my Father for a while. :) ever since that moment, he has been Daddy/Dad. and no matter where we are or who we are around, i call him what he is. only a couple of times has it created any kind of fuss...but usually, people think nothing of it...we're far enough apart in age to where it's believable that he is my biological Father, and some people even think we look alike, lol.

He calls me sweet...he started calling me that before we developed a serious relationship, because he thought i was just so unbelievably/freakishly sweet...he only calls me by name when he's very upset or angry with me, and fortunately those times have been rare. of course he has terms of endearment for me...slut, bitch, fuckhole, etc....but "sweet" is my name, like Daddy is his.

not nymph, nymphet. look it up.

I would expect one is a derivation of the other. Nymphs were suppose to be attractive women. If you like the name don't bother over it. Why, don't you like to swim?

What we have done on the occasional times of what we have labeled as 'Master Play' she will refer to me as 'my love' before and after each utterance as in: my love, yes my love, or my love, no thankyou my love.

My predominant titles for him are Master or Amo which were requested as his preferred terms when we committed to each other. Have at times used his name or nickname but find it feels awkward and uncomfortable for me....he does at times get showered witha variety of love names though, but there is usually a Master or Amo lurking in the conversation also. I do not address other dominants in these ways as though I may respect their role, they are not my dominant and as such I keep those titles as special for him in honour of his significance in my life. Equally he has a variety of love names, as well as my slave name, which he reserves for me alone.

I call my current play partner "Daddy" and occasionally "Sir".
I asked what his preferences were and we had discussion about it before settling on that.

As long as I show the proper respect, though, I don't think he'd mind if I chose to call him something else.

I was told to adress Him as Master and do so almost exclusively. I actually even let it slip when we are other places as its just habit. You should see the look i got when in a store and said Master, the sales clerks eyes got big as dinner plates....lol.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOPSIE! I bet your Master was thrilled with you later, though.

I don't have a lot of experience in practice, but to me, a submissive must earn the right to call me Master, and even Sir is a privelige. That is because I do not accept submission from just anyone.

It makes the whole thing more valuable to be choosy, I think. But anyway, that's my 2 cents.

A nymph is the name for any nature spirit. For instance, a dryad is a tree/forest nymph while a nereid was a sea nymph. There were 12 types in all.

Had an interesting and positive reaction to a slip recently, though I tend to call him Master everywhere, just sometimes more discreetly than others. We were going into a hardware store, chatting on the way to the door. I did something I can't remember now which Master gave a play threat to so I teasingly said, 'Spank me, spank me great Master....oh please do', without realising there was a man behind us. He found the exchange amusing.
