I'm watching the dubbed version of "Das Boot,"(BEST SUBMARINE FILM EVER,!!!!!!!!)and would like to know. Which is best. Do you mind subtitles, or watching it dubbed?
It's not like I don't mind subtitles, I just think it can be hard to catch everything they say. Plus, it takes away from the action, when you have to read what's being said. Although, it's pretty silly seeing a guy mouthing words, and their saying something else. I have to concentrate on what's going on in the movie to keep from laughing.
You should know that when they have to match the appearance of words in one language to the way lips move in a different language, the meanings are frequently, horribly changed. Printing the words is bad enough, and lots of things get left out, but making one language LOOK like another is hopeless, except perhaps in a boneheaded action movie with no verbal subtlety.
Another problem: I've written things that were translated into other languages. From English to German, for instance, it takes twice as much text in German. Japanese, too, is much longer, partly because of all the necessary etiquette that must be inserted; it's rather like the old Jane Austin "And now, dear reader, let me explain..."
