Consider this.
Ever since the World Trade Center was bombed the first time (1993), any discussion of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction has always entailed mention of Anthrax as a threat. It has become the common example for biological warfare scenarios. It has great press as threats go. We've all heard of it.
Apparently this new drug Ciprfloxacin (sp?) sells in this country for around 350 big ones for a months supply. The maker of this drug has seen a meteoric rise in stock price and profits since 9/11.
I do not for a minute suggest that this company had anything to do with the events of that day. But what good capitalist wouldn't see the opportunity presented here. Every talking head that could get airtime was expounding on terrorist matters and the possibility of biological terrorism was discussed muchly. Almost always mentioning Anthrax. Creates fear and a possible market.
No one is mentioning the other drugs that are just as effective against this infection like Penicillin or Tetracycline. It's always Cipro this and Cipro that. Even one of the big time news anchors got in on it by signing off with "In Cipro we trust"
It is not easy to produce Anthrax like the strains that have been mentioned but it would easily be within the capabilities of a pharmaceutical company I am sure.
So there ya have it....you make a bunch of this very expensive drug then you infect a few people (highly visible people of course) to demonstrate the possibility and watch the mad rush. You wouldn't even have to put any lives in real danger, just get the wonks yapping about it.
You ever hear of this drug before September?
There ya go Todd! Run with it baby!
