Europe steps up in artillery race as U.S. halts Ukraine aid
The halt of military supplies from the USA to Ukraine means that European countries must fill the gap. This is particularly important in the context of ammunition, which is used in large quantities on the front every day. Looking back to last year, when the Biden Administration halted the flow of artillery ammunition to Ukraine in an attempt to put political pressure on the GOP in order to force concessions on the border, this backfired on Biden - it became evident at that point that Ukraine was not an issue on which the GOP could be leveraged. The end result though, was the loss of the Avdiivka fortress area - an unnecessary defeat that costs Ukraine considerable casualties.We now see Trump exerting the same sort of unscrupulous pressure on Ukraine, this time to force concessions with regard to "negogiations" with Russia, obviously designed to force Ukrainian capitulation as, we yet, we have seen no similar pressure exterted on Putin. Instead, aid to Ukraine has been halted - and again, artillery ammo and air defence missiles are probably going to have the most impact, costing Ukrainian soldiers and civilians their lives at the hands of Trump, the American ally of the genocidal Russian mass-mudderer, Putin.
BUT - has Europe stepped up artillery ammo production to the extent that the US supply can be replaced
Ukraine can use up to 3,000-8,000 shells daily, which requires a production capacity of up to 100,000 shells monthly. This volume was not achievable for European firms in 2022, but after three years of war, this situation has improved in many countries. Now, production at one million shells annually may be realistic, and according to some declarations, it is possible to reach even two million by 2026.
Germany produced less than 30,000 shells annually in 2022. Still, political decisions and actions by the country's largest defense company, Rheinmetall, have led it to aim for a production volume of 700,000 shells annually by 2025. However, this number also includes the production capacity of Rheinmetall's Denel plant in South Africa, which faces a political ban from the local government on producing ammunition for Ukraine. Therefore, Rheinmetall's production volume may be somewhat smaller. Say, 500,000
One of the larger ammunition producers in Europe is the Nammo corporation, which has factories in Norway, Finland, and Sweden. Large factories typically had a production capacity of 20,000-30,000 shells annually, but their efficiency has increased recently. For instance, Nammo's factories in the Swedish city of Karlskoga doubled their production by the end of 2024, and Finland's Nammo Lapua Oy plant had similar declarations in 2023. The total production of Scandinavian countries is estimated to range from 100,000 to 200,000 shells annually. Say, 100,000
Another potential source of ammunition for Ukraine is the French Nexter corporation, which currently produces 50,000 shells annually and plans to expand to 400,000 within three years. Let's say 50,000 rounds anyhow. Conservative, but safe.
Kyiv can also rely on British BAE Systems factories, which, according to their declarations, aim to increase production capacity eightfold by 2026. As of 2022, they were working to expand production and producing "tens of thousands of rounds annually" so lets say 50,000 as well, altho it may well be more than that now
Additional support may come from Czech Republic and Slovakia factories, capable of producing between 100,000 and 200,000 shells annually. Again, say 100,000 rounds
There's also Poland, which was producing 30-40k rounds per year but was also upscaling.
So
Germany - 500,000 rounds
Nammo - 100,000 rounds
Nexter - 50,000 rounds
BAE Systems - 50,000 rounds
Czechia - 100,000 rounds
800,000 rounds annually in total. In addition, there is whatever Ukraine is managing to manufacture and they have been upscaling rapidly, so that may well make up the gap in 2026. 155mm artillery ammo supply should not be the bottleneck for Ukraine that it was a year ago.
In 2024, Ukraine produced 2.5 million artillery shells of various calibres—from 50-mm mortar rounds to 155-mm and 155.5-mm howitzer shells. According to Ukrainian sources, this represents more than a sixfold increase compared to 2022 and a fourteenfold increase compared to the years before the full-scale Russian attack. With support from foreign partners, including Germany, Ukrainian ammunition production is expected to continue growing.
What WILL impact Ukraine is HIMARS rockets and Patriot air defense missile supplies.....Ukraine has a reported six MIM-104 Patriot missile batteries — used to protect some of the country's highest priority targets. The Patriot, with a range of about 160 kilometers, is one of the few systems Ukraine operates that can hit distant targets and knock down Russian ballistic missiles like the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missile. The pause in deliveries of U.S. weapons coincides with signs that Russia will double down on longstanding efforts to exhaust Ukraine’s remaining supplies of Patriot air-defense missiles. And with no chance of any immediate replenishment from Washington, that leaves Ukraine’s infrastructure and key cities highly exposed. Ukrainian military officials have been clear that any U.S. pause risks Ukraine facing significant shortfalls in critical ammunition and defense systems at a pivotal moment in the war.
Cutting off supplies at this point amounts to nothing less than deliberate sabotage of Ukrainian defense efforts by the Trump Admnistration - a stab in the back from a key supporter, altho at this point it's increasing;y evident that the Trump Administration is an ally of Putin rather than Ukraine, and Ukraine is going to have to find ways to win this war without the USA, or even with the USA actively working against them.
