I hope this isn't an in-appropriate place to discuss this... I figured there are people (especially some gays) for whom our pets are the closest we get to having kids. Anyway, I was shocked to find on CNN.com that Wisconsin is considering to allow the hunting of free-roaming domestic cats. The article can be found at:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science/04/12/killing.wildcats.ap/index.html.

Due to an unintentional medical mistake at the vets, I had to put my cat of almost 15 years to sleep. It wasn't easy as I had never done such a thing. However, the mistake was causing him to seizure every 5 minutes, and he could no longer walk. I missed his birth by a few hours, but I was there to hold him at the end. Though it was 6 weeks ago, I still miss him. I will always miss him and his mother and brother who died before him.

This Wisconsin thing really shocks me. I will never understand people that enjoy killing. (Ok, I'm a bit of a hypocrite I admit. I kill bugs, and I'm not quite a total vegetarian. However, for what its worth. I felt so bad about a little mouse that was trapped on a sticky paper trap all day long at work. He was crying all day long to the point that it seemed cruel, so I took him outside and released him. It was hard to seperate him from the paper, but I did.)

Anyway, as I see it, if pets are a problem to birds or whatever, they should round them up, spade/neuter them, but not shoot them. I'd hate to think that had my house cat gotten out, he might have been shot because he didn't have a collar on.

Wow, so now it's open season for shooting cats! Unbelievable. Yes, I've owned my cat for about four years now. I never really was a "cat person", I've always owned dogs. Ironically just when my dog died (12 years old) in walked this cat into my life. These people down the street had abandoned her when they moved. I had no idea about how to tend or care for cats, but I learned along the way. Fortunately she was already spayed. I do have a collar on her. Four years later now, I couldn't think how it would be without her. Reading this CNN article is really disturbing to know that such a law ( or license) to kill cats is a possibility. I think the time and the money used for this would be better spent on more education for the public about having their pets spayed/neutered. More TV ads, commercials, etc. It's bad enough that millions are euthanized every year at the pound.

Those are not pets. They are animals that people drop off in the boonies, thinking a farmer will adopt them. Shooting those cats is a good thing. Period.

Well, then keep those gun happy shooters out of the neighborhoods, and keep them out there in the boonies. Smells like NRA stuff to me though :catroar:

I know it sounds cruel, but these are FERAL cats. They are not only the ones that have been dumped in the woods, but the great-great-great grandkittens of dumped cats. They are upsetting the ecosystem and decimating the bird population. Birds are neccessary for the pollination of plants. The cats are a problem.
Yes, the idea of hunting cats creeps me out. All hunting creeps me out. But something has to be done and this is a way to do it without costing the taxpayers any money.

Pets should not be treated as children or replacements/surrogates as such.

Anyway, I'm with Bob Barker on this one, even though I dislike doing even that much to an animal.

We try to keep it civil here, Brinnie.

In Portland, we had a big problem wih feral cats around the docks,as you can imagine any fishing port will. The city instituted a program to trap the cats, after which they are vaccinated and neutered, then released.

The population quickly dropped to manageable numbers. There are enough cats to keep the rat population in check, without becoming a nuisance themselves.

I don't remember that- when was that?
I lived right on Main downtown for a year and never seen any wild cats.

I guess people are willing to pay for ammo, but not to neuter their animals before the irresponsibly dump them on the side of the road.
