Donald Trump, in his never-ending war on the NFL, lied about the league’s declining TV ratings in a speech Thursday to Montana residents:

“This commissioner, where this guy comes from, I have no idea. They’re paying him $40 million a year, and their ratings are down 20 percent. But you know why the ratings are down? Yes, the flag.”

Are NFL ratings down? Yes, but only if you don’t compensate for the overall decline in TV viewers due to streaming services, et cetera. If you do compensate for the overall decline in TV viewers, NFL ratings are up.

I agree with this to some degree. I have always been a HUGE NFL fan, but that has seriously dropped off. It is in part, as you say, the rule changes that are intended to change the nature of the game. But its more than that. I, like most fans, enjoy sports as entertainment, a diversion from work, and politics, and problems in our lives. But now soooo much of a game broadcast is devoted to politics, which when combined with all the ridiculous stoppages in play, leaves very little time to enjoy a game. Consequently, I watched very very little NFL this year. I watch college ball, but that is getting the same way to a degree. Its much more enjoyable to actually go to a college game and enjoy the atmosphere, but that requires a big investment in time and money. So, over the last couple years I have really dropped off from a rabid fan to someone who is only mildly interested anymore.

Now, I must add something else. I used to upgrade my cable package every fall for additional NFL and college football. But I quit doing that 2 years ago and actually completely dumped cable this winter. That in turn means i am not only not watching hardly any NFL, but my TV viewing in total is WAY down. And to be honest, that is actually a blessing.
