For the first time ever..

.. just before I turn 25, I was involved in a fight. A real physical punches-thrown-at-head fight.

Of course it was a hockey fight.. one of the opposing players had been playing reckless all game. He ended up two hand slashing a kid on the back of his legs during the first part of the game. I of course being on the ice skated beside him as he skated away and said "(If you) Do that again, we'll be having more than just words." 15 minutes later he shoved another teammate fairly hard into the boards from behind, but I was on the bench when it happened. We met up five minutes later and I resumed skating beside him:

"Remember what I said?"

"Yeah.."

"Alright then.. lets go.."

"I don't want to.."

(I jab at his chest)

"You seem to have no problem giving cheap shots.."

Then we both dropped the gloves.

Other than the fact I'm going to have a sore right hand tommorow I feel ok, but I feel funny. Something about actually punching another man in the head.. hearing your hand smack against his face. Not to mention the sound your own head makes when punched..

I don't plan on doing that ever again really.. It sure does give me a new appriciation for what the pros do and go through night in and night out.

Well I don't know if I won or lost.. he got in some good shots.. about two or three... I got a few good ones in. I tried to switch from right to left hand, but as I did he slipped and fell onto his knees and I let go.

No need for one of us to knock the other out.. Just need to let the guy know cheap shots aren't welcome.

Personally, I think fighting in sports should be banned. But that is just my opinion based upon how my kids view the fights.

No one was cut. It was as clean a fight as one can get.. we both dropped gloves, then helmets then squared up..

I don't think fighting in hockey should be banned. I'd rather two guys fight (like we did tonight) than someone think they need to return those cheap shots with a cheap shot against him that could injure him more that any fight could.

i always get pissed when i can't get my players to fight on "blades of steel"
the only sports fight i have been in was a fight with a good friend during a backyard football game. i lost, it was a learning experence

Just to add to that..

The guys on my bench knew I had words with him and the first chance I got to the bench I made it known that I would take care of him if he did it again. Some of the guys would just as soon crack him with a cheap shot in retaliation than drop gloves.. And the way this guy was playing, I could tell he wasn't meaning to go out and hurt people.. the two hander I'm sure was given because he had just had the puck taken away on him.

But like I said, having done it once and knowing what it's like.. I don't think I'll be doing it anytime soon again.. The sound of my head being smacked by a fist is just a little too creepy.

The thought crossed my mind for a moment.. I could have also fed him a few more when he went down on his knees... *shrugs* But there is that whole code of honor when it comes to hockey fights.. That and I am a firm believer of what goes around comes around.

I did what I felt had to be done. But I don't want to do it again..

Not only did it feel strange to fight, but it threw my entire game off the rest of the night.. I missed the net four times.

One of the reasons I fought him is because I wanted to face him like a man and not have him hurt seriously with a cheap shot from someone else. As brutal as hockey fights can be, they are a much better option than being hit from behind or slashed.
