I know there has to be one out there ...

I want to be able to take a list of files (e.g. the mp3's of a book on cd) and rename them with a 01, 02, 03, ... in front of each CD. I would like to have a utility that would take

Name of first
Name of second
Name of third

Changed to

01 Name of first
02 Name of second
03 Name of third

etc. That way I could order them when putting them on the mp3 player.

Such a utility would also allow you to rename digital pics from

DSC9082
DSC9083

to something more meaninful like

Thanksgiving 2004 1
Thanksgiving 2004 2

Thanks for whatever help anyone can give.

Try ACDSee. I don't have the web addy for it, but it googles well. :)

The only problem with it is you have to pay for it. Not very expensive though. However, they do have a 30 day free trial.

I'll check it out ... but yea, I should have mentioned I'm a cheap bastard who would rather get something for free.

Wow !! is all I can say. The File Renamer utility rocks!!! The basic (free) version does everything I need it to and some more. It allows a preview so you can see what you're doing before committing to the change. Great little utility - thanks ShyGuy68.

With Windows XP...

You can go into Windows Explorer and highlight all the files you want to rename using "Shift" or "Crtl" keys, then:
Rename the first one and all the others will be names the same with a number after it like:
Bigboots.jpg
Bigones.jpg
Oneonly.jpg

After marking all and renaming the first one, they become:
Bigboots(1).jpg
Bigboots(2).jpg
Bigboots(3).jpg

This is not quite what you are asking for, but it has worked well for me changing jpeg files. (Will work for any files)
