If you live in
Alabama, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, or West Virginia,
there is a program called "Angel Food Ministries," which sells a box of decent food (store-valued at $50-60 or so) for $25.00. They also have "Specials," which are available for varying prices when you buy one or more of the regular units.

The various states are broken into two order/delivery cycles; click "Host Sites" and then your state, then find the nearest provider. At the bottom of the "Menu" page, it tells which states are in the "First Saturday order/third Saturday pickup" cycle, or "Second Saturday/Fourth Saturday" cycle.

The menu for June is:
(1) 2 lb. Salisbury Steak Dinner
(1) 2 lb. St. Louis Ribs
(1) 2 lb. Chicken Tenders
(1) 18 oz. Stuffed Manicotti
(8) 4 oz. Country Fried Beef Steaks
(1) 2 lb. Chicken Breast Fillets
(1) 6.5 oz. Lasagna Hamburger Dinner
(1) 7.5 oz. Ranch & Bacon Pasta Salad
(1) 16 oz. Pinto Beans
(1) 16 oz. Sliced Frozen Carrots
(1) 16 oz. Corn
(1) 24 oz. Steak-Cut French Fries
(1) 8 oz. Corn Muffin Mix
(1) 1 lb. White Rice
(1) 14 oz. Peanut Butter
(1) 10 ct. Waffles
(1) Each Dessert Item

and the Specials are:
#1
5.5 lb. Grill Box - $18.00
(4- 8 oz. New York Strips, 1-1 lb. Italian Sausage, 4-6 oz. Pork Chops, 1-1 lb. Chicken Breast Fillet)
#2
5.5 lb. BBQ Box - $18.00
(4-6 oz. Baseball-cut Sirloin Steaks, 4-4 oz. Bacon Wrapped Sirloin Fillets, 4-4 oz Steakburgers, 2 lb. Beef Back Ribs)
#3
10 lb. Chicken Combo - $17.00
(2 lbs. Wings, 2 lbs. Breaded Tenders, 2 lbs. Breaded Nuggets, 2 lbs. IQF Boneless/Skinless Chicken Breast, 2 lbs. Breaded Frying Chicken)

Not a bad deal at all for a family - or even an individual - trying to eat half-decently on a budget!

Obivously Connecticut is not budget minded, lol.
If you're in the western portion of CT, might it work for two or three of you to get together and carpool to a NY location? Of course, if the cost of gas goes much higher, it probably won't work for anyone who lives more than 5 miles from one of the host sites. :(

And don't forget the traffic congestion here. I have to drive the I-84 corridor for work, but on the weekend I refuse to drive. It takes hours to get anywhere, so I doubt if I would bother.

I assume this is meant for people who are between the level of self-sufficiency and food stamps? That is, people who make too much for food stamps but not enough to feed themselves well?

The nearest one to me is about 50 miles away...not really worth it! (I'm vegetarian anyway.)

We don't have congestion, but it still takes us hours to get anywhere!

Want some of ours? We've got plenty. People are always shocked when I tell them it takes 3 hours to go 30 miles here, but it does. I-395 out of the city at rush hour...whoo boy, you'd NEVER get me doing that every day. I did it once and just about went insane. Thank goodness for reverse commutes, mine is normally only 1 hour to go 20 miles!

I think this is a great service - not just for folks who have food stamps but for the many folks that don't qualify for food stamps and yet are struggling (there is a huge population of working poor these days that don't qualify for assistance). Thanks for the link. :)

I'm not sure whether it's meant for those folks, but I do know that it's available to anyone - no forms to fill out to "qualify," etc., etc. Just put your order in by the appropriate date, and pick it up on the appropriate date. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have a vegetarian menu - yet. ;)

You're welcome - and what you've described above is pretty much where I'd put myself: working poor but on my own.

Should one presume this means you approve of or like the AV? I thought it was a fairly good match for my "custom user title." ;)

Damn, me too...keep that one around, Sir_Winston...

I keep meaning to thank you for posting this info, Sir Winston.

If only they had centers in Northern CA - have friends who could definitely benefit. It's a great idea...
