Because readers are idle, uncaring bastards who don't realise that the only reward for an author on here is votes.

The number of low votes could be increased by having the voting box visible on screen during the reading time (as some other boards do), instead of only at the end of the story. Then people who read a little and discard a story because they don't like it, could be nasty more easily.
