Thong...I think the real reason is less about the back and more about the fact that I have yet to find a pair of bikinis that narrow as sharply or thinly as they pass between the woman's legs...I like when just the lips are (barely) covered and I can see all the delicious flesh...

As for material it depends on my mood really...I love velvet and satin if I'm in the a tacticle mood but I love sheer if more visual...Either way my preference is for covering enough for suggestion and almost being able to see/feel the treasure itself, but little more...
