Remember, not everyone writes what you like or how you like.

Not everyone uses realism.

Not everyone knows how to use proper grammar.

Even the worst stories could be the best ones that person wrote.

We all come from different places. What we say may be acceptable where we are from but not for others. (I personally have had to go through this one)

Think about what you write when you log a feedback. Not everyone understands a hostile message.

I do practice what I preach. I have gotten many bad reviews as I have good ones. What I learned is to just brush it off and try again.

That's good advice.

I'd rather get bad feedback than none, at least it makes me feel someone is paying attention.

P.S. I like your Tom of Finland AV.

I understand what you’re saying, and I empathize with a lot of your points. No one likes to be attacked or demeaned for something they’ve written, especially when they’ve worked at it and it’s really the best they can do. And some comments and opinions can be just downright hostile and rude.

On the other hand, the more-or-less regular reviewers here in the Discussion Circle really do their best to give a good, useful analysis of a story, and we work at it. I’ve seen hard criticisms of stories here, but I’ve never seen anything insulting or rude. We take our fiction seriously here. A good review takes a lot of time and effort, and I think we have a right to expect a certain amount of respect from an author who submits a story for discussion. Not all of us are perfect grammarians or spellers, but if we want to consider ourselves writers we have to master the basic techniques. Otherwise it’s like being a color blind painter or a photographer who doesn’t know how to use a camera. This is not a place to bring your stories if you don’t want them picked apart, because picking apart is what we do here.

If you just want to hear what people thought of your story—whether they liked it or not—then this is not the place to post it. Fiction is an art, every bit as difficult and valuable as painting or sculpture, and this is kind of the Master-class of Literotica: the best criticism Lit has to offer. Stories get worked over pretty good here, and that’s precisely why people come.

To echo Doc M a little. I was deathly afraid of a review by him, not becuase he is any way hostile, but because he takes it seriously and isn't going to sugar coat anything. When I fianly screwed up the courage to submit a work to the SDC it was his review and Hiddenself's that I dreaded most, but wanted most too. They both know what they are talking about and thier time and opinions were invaluable to me.

Neither trashed my story to the extent I feared, both provided excellent sugggestions and advice. everyone who reviews for the SDC expects you as an author to want honest critique. it hurts sometimes, but an honest evaluation by someone who has mastered many of the technical skills is a godsend. Equally important are the reviews by those who just know what makes a good story and can tell you where yours falls down. In any review you are as likely to get some negatives, if people only told you what you were doing right you would never be avble to grow as an author.
