At a football game for 14-15 yr olds in Port Orange Fl, a brawl broke out among coaches and parents following a last second, game winning touchdown. These incidents seem to be on the increase. Some commentators are pointing to these and similar outbreaks of out of control behavior, and seeing the breakdown of American social mores, as we have known them. Personally, I think that there should be a mandatory seven-day waiting period on the sale of footballs. Folks just need to cool off. Really, what is going on here?

I have been wondering about this, too. It is just so bizarre to me that these parents are willing to get into fist fights over kids sports. I was appalled that just recently a man killed another man over a kids game. I think that parents should be banned from the games if there is even one outburst. I live in Texas, where football is king & I think the biggest problem is too many parents wanting to fulfill their dreams through their kids. I am very competitive & was disappointed at first when my son wasn't really into sports. We tried several & it just wasn't his thing. After watching adults scream at these kids & kids so stressed if they weren't perfect, I was glad his interests were audio/video technology & I am glad I let him decide what he wanted to do. I am a firm believer in parents being involved with their kids activities, but the main thing should be to teach the kids sportsmanship & teamwork.

Unfortunately, it's not as simple (as usual) as just the parent's pushing. One or both of their parents probably pushed them in the same manner and so on. The parents' feelings of insecurity and the like lead them to try and live through their kids instead of for or with them. Then, it's the parents emotions at stake and they respond completely out of proportion to a kid's game, unfortunately for everyone involved.
