It's like a game. Touchdown gay rights! But the ball is back in the statehouse now. I'm for giving couples the same rights but calling it a civil union.

Would you support breaking up existing people's marriages and thus plummeting them back into legal limbo over the term - I'm curious?

What's not tenable is the current "you're married, you're not" reality when you go state to state or in the case of CA "well you can be married, but you were too late." IA basically showed that someone gets it - there is no legally compelling, constitutionally compelling reason for saying what two consenting adults cannot do in this case.

I personally don't care what you call it. Apparently neither does Iowa.

And it's only back in the statehouse in the form of amending the state constitution. Good luck with that. A lot of people will want it, but the majority of people in IA are much more worried about whether they have a job the next day than what the guy up the street calls his roomate.

We really do want Gov't to get the fuck out of the way here. Until the R's capture that sentiment better, they're going to remain heelbiter puppies as a party.

It needs to be done at the national level. That won't go down well in rural Georgia where 90% of the people voted the other way. I recently found out that my aunt who went to church her entire life was a lesbian. And when I was j's Master she called me crying one day because her wife hurt herself. And she would have no rights a the hospital and only one or two people at company knew about it. It makes me sad.

I agree with you and it's a long slow push through the states. I don't know, I personally trust even these supremes to do the right thing, because even the conservatives would have to resort to some serious revisionism to vote against, and I don't think even old Scalia's back bends that far right. But the HRC and whatnot really wanted this at the state by state level, no dramatic test cases.

I think that's going to have to happen, though.

Obama hasn't touched it. He hasn't done away with Don't ask don't tell. I don't think he even needs the congress to do anything to get that done. Commander and Chief and all. I think it's stupid to kick out someone because of what they do in their private time. When we are at fucking war especially.

I personally would like to see him do a Truman. But we've got a budget to get through, I can understand not fucking myself a la Bill right out the gate, too.

Frankly, I think there should be a Truman before this whole thing gets out of hand completely, but I dunno. He's pretty savvy about things thus far.

Obama wont tackle that until and if the economy comes back. He's used most of his political capital on the fucking bill no one read.

Hey, if you want me to knock those freaking congressional reprobates, I'm with you. I've never thought of them as completely useless till now. My single senator proved herself not completely a democrat party tool with one recent vote, though.

And I still only HAVE one, ahahahah!

And the economy will come back. We're the US. Let the Chinese make noises about world currency, they're STILL buying debt to deflate their own currency so we buy their shit.

I think we should tell Europe just to go fuck themselves and we'll clean up Afghanistan alone. Have all the deployed Marines and the most kick ass Army divisions. Give them about two years to kill as many bad guys as they can and then get out.

Dude, it's not like the Russians were pussies.

This right here, in big, bold letters.

No, anything but. Afghanistan is just untakable.

I'm sure there is some aid coming in to the Taliban. But nothing like we provided Afghanistan against the Russians. The Russians lost over 400 aircraft. I'm not aware of anything the Taliban have that can shoot one of ours down.

Now if you had a Charlie Wilson in Russia.

The land itself is your worst enemy. If someone disappears there, your chances of finding them are slim, and digging them out can be brutal.

Have you seen the movie "The Beast" (also called "The Beast of War")? 80's film about a Soviet tank and crew in the invasion of Afghanistan. It was an interesting action-ish film based on a play called "Nanatawai."

No, but it sounds very interesting.

I would not call it terribly accurate, but it was an interesting movie. There was more focus on psychology than just warplay. Given that it was the 80's, it offered an interesting view of the Russians. They ran the gamut from the beast himself (the psychotic tank commander), to the main character, a sympathetic and likable chap that was increasingly dissatisfied with the war.

I think America is finally opening up more to gay rights.

Isn't it ridiculous? I'm still hoping that Coleman will realize that all he's doing with his continued lawsuits is disenfranchising all of the state with our reduced representation, rather than the handful of votes he's continuing to fight over.

It's coming. Slowly but surely, it's coming.

My state will be last, of course. "For Lovers" indeed.

I doubt we'll be last. There are places like Alabama around that will likely hold out longer than we will.

I mean, c'mon, we voted for Obama last election cycle, and Webb. And did you see that Webb was pushing for MASSIVE prison reform and decriminalisation of minor drugs? Balls the size of church bells.

"Jim Webb's courage v. the "pragmatism" excuse for politicians"

Not sure if the link works. If not, I can copy and paste the article to you in a PM. It's worth reading.

Proportionatly more Canadians and Brits have been killed in Afghanistan. But I suppose a country that won both world wars single handedly will prevail in a region which has been the grave yard of many a superpower.

Haha! Silly Euro with your inconvenient facts! Next thing you'll be saying that we didn't win the Cold War single-handedly too! You crazy non-English-speakers and your wacky senses of humour.

And funny ways of spelling things.

:D

(The last phrase there is a beautiful descriptor of that place. The Soviets weren't the first superpower to grind to a halt in Afghanistan, and I'm sure we won't be the last.)

The Brits tried it before and failed. Personaly I dont see why we are supporting a government which has just legalised rape.
