1 new router, 1 ethernet card, 2 geeks, one for each repair
and relocating all the lost data plus $270 later I am back...
The hit came thru the modum which figures since I have everything
else surge protected beyond reasonable....

Damn... I have a very close friend in Bradenton whom had exactly the same thing. IN his case it burned out the mother board too and the whole system was FRIED.. What is it in Florida, is there something not done to protect the lines coming in.. Just out of curiosity, do you use a cable modem or phone line?? I am guessing phone line because you didnt mention replacing the cable modem box??

Hey at least you were able to save your hard drive?? My friend lost their hard drive too...

Brighthouse had to reset the cable modem and the drives are ok thank God. Everything else is surge protected to the way beyond.... phone lines, electric lines etc....

So it didnt come in via the cable modem, but the router got fried ?? Was it a lightening bolt or just a power surge?

It had to come in thru the cable modem but that survived.
Nothing made sense other than my withdrawals from no internet for 4 freaking days. I was reading 2 books a day and watching movies inbetween...

Hmmm.. doesnt make much sense to me.. I worry bout my systems over in West Palm Beach area which is why I am asking so many questions, not tryig to be nosy... We get soo much freakin lightening, and we have Adelphia over there whom is worthless and in bankruptcy.. altough I read that Comcast bought them, but I doubt they will put any money into them.. It seems to me that if you lost the router, and not the cable modem, the surge must have come in from the electical outlet instead.. either way, its scary.. My friend in bradenton had it come in on the phone line. Its really discusting that you have to put a surge protector on every access point BEFORE the computer to save it.. Not sure how a surge protector is going to ever stop a surge coming in the way you described yours.. Do you have a fax modem also on your computer? If your pc is connected to a phone line, it could have come in that way, then back tracked through the lines to the router which would explain why the cable modem didnt die... I dont connect my pcs to phone lines anymore even for faxes because of the surges they bring in..

Oh well, any good movies? I went to see Snakes on Plane last night.. Love Sam Jackson and the movie was awesome!! Books for me? I dont have the patience to read.. I try though!!

Protecting power lines in is easy with a good surge protector (although I prefer and suggest a UPS since it also protects against brownouts).

What I've done to protect my system as far as the cable input is go wireless. I go from my cable modem to a netgear wireless router. The my computers throughout the house can pickup the signal but are completely isolated from power surges coming in.

The router was less than $30 from amazon. Cheap insurance to consider

We have a linksys that is both but not set up for wireless yet. Not sure if I want to or not yet since I like the hard line for the 360 and on line playing.

OMB.. Good points and ideas, but dont be so sure your protected.. A UPS protects the electrical surges and obvously brown outs, but unless you have a UPS I am not aware of, the Cable from Comcast or Adelphia or whomever, needs to run through a surge protector. The problem with that is you loose some signal doing that. Im not aware of any surge protector that you can actually run the cable through it before or after your cable modem?
Yea, wireless is a great idea and I used it flawlessly in my last home, but my current home was already fully prewired with fiber, so i would be foolish to not use the hard line. Plus, my daughter has friends that come over and plug in all the time. If i went wireless I would have to open the security for them, and the neighbors which I dont want to do. Like I said, unfortunately with my investment in the existing cable lines, I am going to stay with hardwire.. But an EXCELLENT point on the wireless. No more hard wire in the future for me!!

One of the few nice things about my real world job is the connections and the $$$.
Can't handle the scarey stuff. I am a wuss I admit it freely. Now I just need to get my sound working back on the computer and reinstall my office software.

good for you.. I had the connections two jobs back and miss em.. There was always something someone bought and then didnt need so it was going to go in the trash.. and instead I got it.. wahoooo

I dont go for the scary stuff either.. but things are getting easier all the time which is nice...

I have had a problem with sound on my laptop for over a year and finally gave up. CAlled Dell and they didnt have a clue.. Seems it works fine when not plugged into the data port, but when I use the base unit and slide it in, I cant get the sound to work for nothing.. The system is about 7 years old, so I dont complain.. It does the other jobs just fine!!!

Honey it might be time to look forward to eh future and all the new stuff they have out there and coming this year...
