Well, orginally it was a disco dance move where two people would "bump" thier hips together. One of the only good things that came from the disco movement.

But in this case a Bump refers to posting a message with the express purpose of moving the thread higher in the active message thread list. Not as much fun as actually making an actual post to a beautiful woman or handsome man on this board, but it does keep the thread from being lost at the bottom of the list.
