Actually, for me, it's an European thing (my manners were learned overseas for the most part: open doors for women, offer your arm to the elderly, always try to be charming, speak this way, etc). One of the things I like about Florida is the very casual atmosphere in that sense (the line between formality and informality is readily blurred), but it does seem to make me stand out as being rather cavalier or galant for women unaccustomed to such treatment... Hopefully, though, not to the point of being prudish or stand-offish (as was the perceived case here) -- again, my apologies, Mrs. Dr. B...
