It seems only right that the horse should be the one to introduce a thread on crops, whips, and floggers. Accordingly, I post below some images and descriptions of the (partial) contents of my footlocker. I’ve said a few words about materials, qualities, and affects, as well as notes on construction for those which I made.

The key thing in making floggers is to learn how to do whipping (hah), which secures rope ends and has other uses as well. These sites give diagrams of whipping, and the first has the bonus of being a Boy Scout site. It’s amazing what they teach these days.

I'll post below as I finish each description. Please do share as well :)

The knotted flagellum

(No picture, alas; it’s missing.)

I miss this very much, and hope to find it soon, as it is most gratifying in use.

To make:

Go to a hardware or home repair store (where, if you’re me, they will soon some to look at you in peculiar ways) and buy a heavy wooden dowel that fits comfortably in your hand. You’ll be using that for a handle. Also buy a good-sized eyehook screw (screw with a wide ring at the top) and a ball of jute twine – rough, brown twine. Some sandpaper helps, and if you care to finish the handle, whatever finish you like.

Saw the dowel to handle length. Sand the edges smooth. Finish if you wish. Insert the eyehook screw into one end. Then cut equal lengths of twine twice the length you’d like the fall, as many as you think you can tie to the eyehook. Pull each length halfway through the hook and tie to secure. Then, for each half of the fall, tie a double knot about every two inches for the length of the strand. Repeated until your flagellum is as full as you would like it.

Affect: This device has a unique feel and affect. While the twine is light, the hard knots strike much harder than the rest of the strand. It’s remarkably stingy in a very rousing way, and leaves unusual marks – like little red bee-stings all over the back. With a gentle hand, it can be quite painless; with a strong lash, it’s exquisitely painful.

(I really must make another.)

Horsey, ther eis a book out, on how to make your own bondage gear with stuff you can get at the store or find around the house. I wish I remembered the title.

Oh Horsey you came through, I knew you would!

Never would I imagine using the boy scouts site....very clever indeed.

It's called "Kinky Crafts." It was passable, but it did not give much in the way of basic skills. I had to find the knots and ropes information on my own.

Try the blue jackets manual :)

Every knot known to man, how to tie it and what it's use is for plus all the lashes and hitches as well :)

Pigskin Flogger

I've attached the photo as a file. Alas, I don't have them online so, I can't drop the images right into the post.

The pigskin flogger is another favorite, although bought and not made by me. The advantage of pigskin is that it is very, very light. That, together with the broad, flat strands, makes this flogger very playful. It's pleasant and soothing on the skin when used gently, and its special nature also makes it a great deal of fun for the wielder. You can strike as hard as you like with it; it never really becomes painful and has almost no sting. It also makes a pretty good noise, so it's great for a dramatic scenes that don't actually hurt. Highly recommended for beginners.

Also excellent for simply caressing one's lover with.

Cowhide Flogger

Another "bought" toy. Cowhide is denser and heavier than pigskin, and strikes heavier. This one has both more "thud" and more "sting" than the pigkin (but then, nearly everything does). It's a good blend of thud and skin, and a more serious toy. You wouldn't want to use your full strength on a beginner if you were wielding something like this. On the other hand, for the more practiced, it's quite delicious. This will leave welts if you use it with a good will. You can find cowhide floggers all over the net, and they really need not cost you much.

Rope Flogger

This is self-made and on the very heavy end of "thuddy" - strong, blunt impact that doesn't cut or sting, but may bruise.

Rope floggers are simple and cheap to make. For this one and several others, I went to the local hardware store and bought a great deal of thick black nylon rope. It comes in a variety of widths - I think this one is made with the 3/8 inch if memory serves, which it may not - and has a pleasant, silky feel.

For this one, I made the handle of a doubled length of the thicker rope whipped with a thinner cord of the same material. The red whipping is done with embroidery silk, which is quite strong. The top of the handle is the loop of the doubled rope, through which two other doubled ropes are looped and then whipped together. I like the soft feel of the longer loose ends of those, but of course you can whip them as short or long as you like.

This is a heavy flogger that can land quite a powerful blow. Its charm is its utter lack of sting, which prevents it from leaving marks and diffuses the sensation of its strike. One has to be just a bit careful with this one, however; it's easy to forget just how hard it's hitting.

Mink Tail Flogger

This one was fun to make. I bought a lot of mink tails from Ebay and whipped them onto the ends of the cords, then whipped the cords together to make the handle. Very easy to do, and the tails were cheap.

This flogger entirely lives up to its rather exotic promise. If you've never been flogged with mink ... ahhh. Quite delicious. It's heavy enough to be sincerely felt, but deliciously sleek as well.

Sorry, somehow missed off the pictures for the last two. Here's the rope flogger.

Gold Cord Flogger

This is another one that was cheap and simple to make and that gives a very pleasant result. You can find this kind of nylon cord at most hardware stores in a variety of colors. I doubled lengths through a metal ring for hanging and then whipped them together to make the handle. The end of each strand is knotted; this both prevents unravelling and adds a nice stinging note to the strike.

You can make a flogger like this as heavy or light as you want. If you make it heavy, like this one, with many strands, the effect will be "thuddy" - mostly blunt impact. The fewer strands, the more "stingy" it will become as the weight decreases but the force of the blow is spread over a smaller area. It retains at least a little sting even when heavy, however, from the knots and the thinness of the strands. This one's good for the long haul. ;)

Soft "Hair" Flogger

Not real hair - that's very hard to come by - but a softer and more easily made substance. This flogger was made by doubling two lengths of thick black nylon rope and whipping the doubled end for a handle. Once it was whipped, I cut the loose ends (they usually burn them in the store so that they will not ravel) and unravelled the rope. (This task requires patience and, ideally, the absence of a cat playing in the ravelling strands.) This is another lovely toy for beginners. It's cheap and easy to make, pleasantly silky to the feel, and extremely difficult to hurt anyone with. The diffuse fluff of the strands neither stings nor really thuds - it simply caresses. Nice for warming up or stroking gently.

Doubling Rope

Sometimes the simplest things are the best. This is just a length of thick black nylon rope whipped at the ends. It's the heavy stuff, the kind they use for climbing or - and I swear the salesman asked this - horses. (Of course I said "yes.") Doubled, this hits quite hard; it has a substantial thud with just a kiss of sting. Held with the end loose, it's more whippy and also a pleasure. Either way, the smooth surface of the rope is quite attractive. For about a dollar in materials, it's hard to beat (ha).

Ooooooh, sexy things. I like!

*eyes glaze over*

I love the last one. Simple, but very effective, I'm sure. Might have to pop down B&Q tomorrow... ;)

Tire Rubber Flogger

This is another cheap and easy one. It's also one of the most dangerous and painful in my collection, so it's well worth while ;) Just take a piece of dowel for the handle, cut to length and smooth. Then take a bicycle tire and slice it into thin strands, then tape with duct or black plastic tape. The strands of this one are both thin and heavy, which makes it very, very stingy. Lovely welts.

Fine Rubber Flogger

This one I had to buy, but it was inexpensive and it's a great deal of fun. The fall is heavy for its size but the strands are thin, so it gives a lovely combination of sting and thud. This is another one to be careful with; it's easy to get carried away ;) Good choice for a heavy session.

Riding Crops

Crops should be used with especial care. Because they are both thin and strong, they can leave serious welts and can break the skin. Both of these are "softened" by the addition of broader tips that diffuse force, but they can still be ... deliciously challenging. A good crop allows a precisely targeted strike and is superbly stinging and rousing. No chance of drifting oft under the loving touch of one of these. They have a special thrill all their own, and mine are some of my favorite possessions.

I feel like I should be shopping now.

Ebay actually can offer some very nice selections and prices. Just stay away from anything called a bullwhip; real ones are quite long and difficult to use properly, and 90% of the time you'll get poorly made trash.
